What Is Naturism?
A simple introduction to naturism, nudism and non-sexual social nudity
Nudity is often interpreted before its context is understood. Naturism and nudism provide examples of situations in which nudity can occur for reasons unrelated to sexual activity.
This educational resource is designed to explain the subject simply, without requiring anyone to participate or agree with it.
People use the words nudism and naturism in different ways. There is overlap between them, but they do not necessarily describe exactly the same philosophy or motivation for every participant.
Understanding that distinction can help reduce assumptions about people based simply on whether they are wearing clothing.
Naturism & Nudism in Simple Terms
Naturisme
Naturism generally describes voluntary nudity, often in social or natural environments, combined for many participants with values such as respect for others, body acceptance, simplicity and connection with nature.
Not every naturist places the same emphasis on each of these elements.
Nudisme
Nudism is often used more directly to describe voluntary non-sexual nudity for comfort, recreation, personal freedom or social participation.
People may identify as nudists, naturists, both or neither.
Nudity Does Not Automatically Mean Sex
One of the most persistent misconceptions surrounding nudism and naturism is that nudity must be sexual.
Context and behaviour matter.
A person swimming, sunbathing, walking, relaxing or participating in an appropriate clothing-optional environment may be nude without engaging in sexual activity.
Likewise, describing something as naturist does not excuse sexual misconduct, harassment, voyeurism or disregard for another person's boundaries.
Clothing-Optional Means Choice
Naturism is not a demand that everybody remove their clothing.
Many clothing-optional environments allow people to decide for themselves whether they remain clothed, partially clothed or nude, subject to the rules of the particular location.
People who prefer clothing do not need to become naturists simply because others make a different choice.
Respect works both ways.
Common Values
There is no single personality, philosophy or motivation shared by every naturist. However, several principles commonly appear in naturist environments and discussions.
Respect
Respect other people, their boundaries, their personal space and their choices.
Consent
Nudity does not remove ordinary expectations concerning consent.
Vie privée
Photography and recording should follow applicable rules and respect people's privacy.
Body Acceptance
Naturist environments may provide opportunities to experience ordinary human bodies without commercial beauty expectations.
Nature
For many naturists, connection with natural environments is an important part of participation.
Coexistence
Naturists and non-naturists do not need to agree about nudity in order to treat each other respectfully.
What Naturism Does Not Tell You
Knowing that somebody is a naturist does not tell you their sexuality, politics, religion, relationships, health, morality or intentions.
Nudity alone does not provide that information either.
behaviour and conduct, not assumptions attached to their state of dress.Judge behaviour by the behaviour.
Is Naturism Legal?
There is no single worldwide answer.
Laws concerning public nudity, indecency, beaches, parks, private venues and clothing-optional recreation vary between countries and can also vary between states, provinces, territories and local jurisdictions.
The rules applying to a private naturist venue may also be different from those applying to a public beach, park, trail or street.
Why Do People Participate?
People report many different reasons for participating in nudism, naturism or clothing-optional recreation.
No single motivation describes every nudist or naturist.
