Home Health & Wellbeing Matrix™

A comparative framework for understanding how everyday choices within the home may change opportunities for interaction with air, daylight, temperature, movement, natural elements and the surrounding environment.

Why begin with the home?

The home is where many people spend a substantial part of their day. It can provide shelter, privacy and controlled conditions, but the quality and diversity of environmental interaction within a home can vary considerably.

A sealed interior room, a naturally ventilated living area, an open doorway, a balcony and a private garden do not offer the same forms of interaction. The Home Health & Wellbeing Matrix™ compares these situations without assuming that one arrangement is suitable for every person or every climate.

Understand the present setting

Identify the environmental opportunities currently available within and immediately around the home.

Compare realistic options

Compare small changes such as moving closer to daylight, improving suitable ventilation or spending time in an accessible outdoor area.

Support gradual progression

Encourage personally appropriate steps rather than prescribing a compulsory pathway or final destination.

Greater bodily exposure does not automatically create greater health and wellbeing immersion. The surrounding environment remains the dominant context, while clothing and footwear act as modifying variables.

What this matrix evaluates

This matrix compares general home environments according to the relative opportunity they provide for interaction with selected environmental factors. It does not measure guaranteed health benefits or predict how an individual will respond.

Standardised conditions

Unless specifically stated otherwise, comparisons assume generally comfortable and safe conditions for the individual, including suitable temperature, humidity, air quality, airflow, daylight or equivalent night-time conditions, and UV conditions appropriate for any exposed skin. Extreme weather, hazardous pollution and unsafe surfaces are not included in the general classifications.

Home classification methodology

The Home Health & Wellbeing Matrix™ compares the relative opportunity for interaction with the surrounding environment. Each classification considers the combined influence of the home environment together with the degree to which the individual can interact with it.

The classification is comparative rather than predictive. It estimates environmental interaction opportunities under standardised assumptions and should not be interpreted as a measure of guaranteed health benefit.

A comparative framework showing how different areas within and immediately surrounding the home may influence opportunities for interaction with air, daylight, vegetation, natural surfaces, movement and the wider environment.

General classification method

Each classification reflects the combined opportunity for interaction with environmental factors rather than a guaranteed health outcome. The wider environment provides the primary context, while clothing and footwear modify how directly the body may experience that setting.

Clothing is treated as one modifying factor. It may alter airflow, thermal sensation, touch and direct surface contact, but it does not independently determine the final classification. A fully clothed person in a rich natural setting may therefore experience greater overall immersion opportunity than a person without clothing in an enclosed room.

Important: Movement from one class to another represents a comparative change in environmental interaction opportunity. It does not imply a proportional increase in health benefit or guarantee a particular outcome.

How to read the home matrix

Begin by locating the home environment that most closely reflects the situation being considered. Then select the column that best represents the clothing and footwear being worn at that time.

The resulting classification describes the relative opportunity for environmental interaction under the standardised conditions defined on this page. It is not a personal health score and does not indicate how much benefit an individual will receive.

The row provides the context

Indoor enclosure, ventilation, access to outdoor space, vegetation and natural surfaces shape the main environmental opportunity.

The column modifies accessibility

Standard clothing, lighter clothing, footwear removal and greater skin exposure may alter airflow, touch, thermal sensation and surface contact.

The class compares opportunity

Classes A to E represent relative interaction opportunities within this matrix. They do not represent clinical outcomes or percentage increases.

What may change the classification?

A classification should only change when the overall environmental interaction opportunity changes meaningfully. Opening a window, removing footwear or moving outdoors does not automatically produce the same change in every home.

Ventilation and outdoor air quality An open window may increase air exchange when outdoor conditions are suitable. It may provide little advantage when airflow is poor or outdoor air quality is unsuitable.
Daylight access Moving closer to useful natural light may increase environmental interaction, particularly when the existing room has limited daylight.
Access to outdoor space A veranda, courtyard, balcony or garden may add direct outdoor air, broader sensory exposure and greater movement opportunity.
Vegetation and natural features Trees, gardens and nearby natural areas may increase visual, sensory and ecological richness compared with a predominantly built setting.
Footwear and surface contact Removing shoes may increase direct contact where a safe, clean and suitable surface is available. It has little effect where that opportunity is absent.
Clothing and skin accessibility Lighter clothing may increase airflow, touch and thermal exposure, but clothing remains only one variable within the wider environment.
Movement and activity Walking, stretching, gardening or completing other suitable activities may provide greater movement opportunity than remaining sedentary.
Comfort, privacy and perceived safety An environment that feels unsafe, uncomfortable or overly exposed may reduce its practical value for the individual despite other favourable features.

A gradual home progression

The following sequence provides examples of increasingly direct environmental interaction. It is not compulsory, and steps may be adapted, repeated or omitted according to the person's home, climate, health, preferences and legal context.

Use available daylight

Spend suitable periods near a naturally lit window or in the brightest appropriate part of the home.

Introduce suitable ventilation

Open a window or external door when weather, air quality, noise and security conditions make this appropriate.

Increase comfortable movement

Add standing, walking, stretching or another appropriate form of movement within the available space.

Use a sheltered outdoor threshold

Spend time near an open doorway, on a veranda, terrace or balcony where those spaces are safe and available.

Remove footwear where suitable

Experience a safe and appropriate surface directly when personal circumstances and hygiene conditions permit.

Spend time in a courtyard or garden

Increase interaction with outdoor air, vegetation, natural sound, daylight and available natural surfaces.

Adapt clothing to comfort and conditions

Choose standard, light or minimal clothing according to temperature, privacy, personal preference and the level of environmental interaction sought.

Use clothing-optional privacy where chosen

Where lawful, private, safe and personally comfortable, the absence of clothing may provide another form of environmental accessibility. It is optional and is not the required endpoint of the progression.

Progression should remain appropriate

The most suitable next step is the one that improves environmental interaction without compromising safety, health, comfort, privacy or local requirements. Greater exposure should never be treated as automatically better.

Evidence-first development

The Home Health & Wellbeing Matrix™ uses an evidence-first approach. Environmental variables are included only where there is a reasonable basis for considering them relevant to human interaction, health or wellbeing.

The matrix does not assign numerical health gains, claim that every exposure is beneficial, or treat emerging theories as established evidence.

Supported variables

Ventilation, air quality, daylight, thermal conditions, green-space exposure, movement, environmental noise and access to outdoor settings may be considered where supported by relevant evidence.

Emerging variables

Areas with developing evidence may be discussed cautiously but are not used to determine classifications unless the available support is sufficient.

Unsupported claims

Speculative mechanisms and unverified health claims are excluded from classification decisions.

Evidence before weighting

If NRE cannot explain and support why a variable changes a classification, that variable is not used to increase or decrease the matrix result.

Safety and practical limitations

A home environment may provide greater interaction opportunity while still being unsuitable at a particular time. Safety, comfort and individual circumstances take priority over progression within the matrix.

Outdoor air quality Windows and doors should not be opened where smoke, pollution, allergens or other outdoor conditions make ventilation unsuitable.
Temperature and humidity Clothing, ventilation and outdoor access should remain appropriate for the actual thermal conditions and the individual's tolerance.
UV exposure Any direct sunlight exposure should account for the current UV Index, duration, shade, skin sensitivity and appropriate protection.
Falls and surface hazards Barefoot activity is inappropriate where surfaces are hot, sharp, slippery, contaminated or otherwise unsafe.
Privacy and local requirements Clothing choices must remain lawful, private where required, and respectful of neighbours, household members and shared spaces.
Health conditions Medical conditions, medications, disability, age and individual sensitivity may alter what is safe or appropriate.

It estimates relative opportunities for interaction with selected environmental factors within and immediately surrounding the home.

It is intended to compare general settings and levels of environmental accessibility. It does not predict individual health outcomes, provide a diagnosis, prescribe treatment or guarantee that a particular environment, activity or clothing level will produce a health benefit.

Unless otherwise stated, classifications assume environmental conditions that are generally comfortable and suitable for the individual, including appropriate temperature, humidity, airflow, air quality, daylight or equivalent night-time conditions, and UV conditions suitable for the level of exposed skin. Extreme weather, hazardous pollution, unsafe surfaces and exceptional circumstances are excluded unless specifically identified.

The matrix evaluates interaction opportunity rather than absolute benefit. Greater exposure is not always preferable, and clothing reduction does not independently determine the classification.

Individual predispositions, age, health status, medications, disabilities, prior experiences, personal preferences, duration of exposure, household circumstances, cultural context and local environmental conditions will influence actual experiences and outcomes.

The framework is designed to evolve as relevant evidence develops. It should be interpreted alongside current scientific knowledge and is not a substitute for medical, environmental, occupational health or public health advice.

Supporting evidence

The Home Health & Wellbeing Matrix™ has been developed using an evidence-first methodology. Variables included within this framework are based on recognised environmental and public health research relating to indoor air quality, natural ventilation, daylight, thermal comfort, environmental noise, movement opportunities and access to natural environments.

These references support the inclusion of environmental variables within the framework. They do not validate individual matrix classifications as measured clinical outcomes.

Indoor air quality

Indoor environments contain pollutants originating from building materials, occupants and daily activities. Suitable ventilation may improve indoor air quality when outdoor conditions permit.

Natural daylight

Exposure to natural daylight contributes to circadian regulation and is recognised as an important environmental factor in healthy buildings.

Green environments

Access to vegetation and nearby green environments has been associated with improved health and wellbeing through multiple environmental and behavioural pathways.

Evidence before weighting

The NRE Health Institute does not assign higher classifications unless there is a reasonable scientific basis for including the relevant environmental variable. Emerging concepts may be discussed separately but are not used to determine classifications until sufficient evidence becomes available.
