Self-Assessed Venues Program
A voluntary pathway for venues to examine their own governance, safety, privacy and operational practices
Naturist and clothing-optional venues vary considerably in size, structure, governance and operating environment.
The NaturismRE Self-Assessed Venues Program provides a structured framework through which venues can examine their own policies, procedures and practices against published NRE expectations.
The programme is designed to encourage stronger governance without requiring a venue to join NaturismRE or become affiliated with a naturist federation.
Venues can use the framework internally, identify areas requiring improvement and document how their practices align with relevant NRE Industry Standards.
Participation remains voluntary. A venue remains independently responsible for its operation, legal compliance, governance and the accuracy of information it provides.
Self-Assessment Is Not Accreditation
A self-assessment records a venue's own evaluation of its practices. It does not establish that NaturismRE has independently inspected, audited or verified every claim made by that venue.
This distinction is important for venues, visitors and NRE.
Understanding Program Status
Different stages of participation should be described accurately.
Self-Assessment Started
The venue is using the framework to review its own operation. This is an internal process and does not imply public recognition, verification or endorsement by NRE.
Self-Assessment Declared
The venue has advised NRE that it has completed the relevant self-assessment and has declared its own alignment with identified standards. The declaration remains the venue's representation unless independently verified.
Independent Verification or Accreditation
This description should only be used where the applicable NRE programme actually requires and completes a separate independent verification, assessment or accreditation process.
What Does a Venue Assess?
The framework looks beyond whether a venue simply describes itself as naturist. It examines the systems and practices supporting the environment in which participation occurs.
Governance & Accountability
Responsibilities, decision-making, policies, accountability and organisational oversight.
Safeguarding
Appropriate safeguarding procedures, responsibilities and responses relevant to the venue and its participants.
Consent & Boundaries
Clear expectations concerning personal boundaries, respectful behaviour and consent.
Privacy & Photography
Rules governing photography, video, recording, consent, device use and the handling of privacy concerns.
Complaints & Incident Handling
Accessible processes for raising concerns, documenting incidents, responding proportionately and escalating serious matters where appropriate.
Accessibility & Inclusion
Reasonable consideration of accessibility, participation barriers, respectful treatment and clearly communicated venue expectations.
Facilities & Hygiene
Cleaning, sanitation, shared-surface practices, facilities and other operational hygiene requirements appropriate to the venue.
Staff & Volunteer Responsibilities
Clear roles, expected conduct, appropriate training and accountability for people operating or supporting the venue.
Digital & Data Privacy
Responsible collection, storage, access and use of personal information, booking data, membership information and digital records.
Environmental Management
Waste, water, energy, land use and other environmental practices relevant to the venue's actual operations.
Advertising & Representation
Accurate public information about the venue, its facilities, participation requirements, status and services.
Safety & Emergency Procedures
Appropriate emergency planning, hazard management, first-response arrangements and communication procedures for the operating environment.
How Self-Assessment Works
The process is intended to support structured review rather than encourage venues to simply confirm that they already meet every expectation.
Review
Examine the relevant NRE Industry Standards and identify which requirements apply to the venue and its operating environment.
Assess
Compare existing policies, procedures and actual practices against the relevant expectations.
Improve
Record gaps and implement reasonable corrective or improvement measures rather than treating the assessment as a pass/fail exercise.
Document
Retain appropriate evidence supporting declarations made through the programme and review that evidence when practices change.
Self-Assessment Should Be Evidence-Based
A meaningful assessment should be supported by actual policies, procedures or operational evidence rather than relying solely on statements of intention.
Current written policy or documented responsibility structure.
Written rules, participant information or appropriate signage.
A documented way for participants to raise concerns.
Applicable procedures, responsibilities and escalation pathways.
Documented arrangements appropriate to the venue and foreseeable risks.
Evidence that personal information and sensitive records are handled appropriately.
Why Self-Assess?
The purpose is not simply to obtain a label. A structured assessment can help a venue examine how its operation works in practice.
Identify Governance Gaps
Review areas that may have developed informally over time and determine whether clearer procedures are needed.
Strengthen Participant Information
Make expectations concerning conduct, privacy, photography, boundaries and complaints easier to understand.
Improve Accountability
Clarify who is responsible for decisions, incidents, complaints, safeguarding and operational oversight.
Prepare for Further Review
A documented self-assessment can help a venue prepare for any separate independent review or verification process it later chooses to pursue.
Support Continuous Improvement
Standards provide a reference point for reviewing practices as laws, technology, risks and participant expectations change.
Demonstrate Transparency
A venue can explain which standards it has considered and what governance systems it says it has implemented without overstating independent verification.
Public Program Listings
Where NaturismRE provides a public listing for participating venues, the listing should identify the venue's actual programme status.
A self-assessed listing means that the venue has made a declaration concerning its own practices. Unless expressly stated otherwise, it does not mean that NRE has inspected the premises, independently verified every declaration or guaranteed continuing conformity.
Venue information can change. Visitors should review current venue rules, access requirements, pricing, operating conditions and other relevant information directly with the venue before attending.
The Venue Remains Responsible for Its Operation
Participation in an NRE framework does not transfer legal or operational responsibility from a venue to NaturismRE.
Depending on jurisdiction and operation, venues may have responsibilities concerning:
Completion of an NRE self-assessment does not establish compliance with any law, licence, insurance policy or regulatory requirement.
Concerns About a Participating Venue
Venue complaints should ordinarily be raised through the venue's own complaints process where appropriate and safe to do so.
Serious matters involving suspected criminal conduct, immediate safety risks, safeguarding concerns or regulatory breaches should be directed to the appropriate authority rather than relying solely on an NRE programme process.
Where a concern relates specifically to a venue's representation of its NRE programme status, NaturismRE may review the information available and, where appropriate:
- request clarification from the venue;
- request correction of inaccurate programme claims;
- update, suspend or remove an NRE public programme listing;
- distinguish disputed or unverified information from verified programme information;
- refer a person to the appropriate external authority where the matter falls outside NRE's role.
Participation in the programme does not mean that NaturismRE assumes responsibility for investigating every complaint concerning a venue.
Built Around NRE Industry Standards
The Self-Assessed Venues Program is an implementation pathway for the wider NRE Industry Standards.
It allows a venue to examine its own operation against published expectations before deciding whether further review, independent assessment or other governance improvements are appropriate.
Venues do not need to become members of NaturismRE or join a federation in order to examine or use publicly available NRE standards.
No membership. No requirement to affiliate. Standards can be considered independently.
Explore NRE Industry StandardsBefore Starting a Self-Assessment
A venue should first identify who has authority to complete the assessment and whether that person has sufficient knowledge of the venue's actual operation.
Standards Begin With Looking Honestly at Your Own Operation
Self-assessment has value when it identifies what is working, what is missing and what needs to improve.
It should not be used to manufacture an accreditation claim that has never been independently established.
Assess honestly. Document properly. Improve continuously.
