Why Fewer Than 1 in 500 Naturists Belong to Federations — And Why NaturismRE Exists
Introduction
For decades, global federations have claimed to represent the naturist community. Yet an overwhelming majority of those who enjoy social nudity remain unrepresented, unheard, and disengaged from formal organisations. The time has come to ask: where are the naturists, and why aren’t they joining?
At NaturismRE, we believe in transparency, data, and fairness. That’s why we've investigated the commonly cited but often unsupported claim that fewer than 1 in 500 naturists are members of a federation. The results not only confirm this ratio — they reveal the profound disconnect between formal organisations and the real naturist world.
The Data That Speaks Loudly
In 2022, Ipsos-MORI conducted a survey across the United Kingdom and found that 14% of UK adults — approximately 6.75 million people — identify as naturists or have engaged in naturist activities like nude sunbathing or visiting naturist beaches. British Naturism, the UK’s national federation, reports around 9,000 members. That means:
Fewer than 1 in 750 naturists are members of their national federation.
A Global Pattern of Disconnection
This isn’t just a British issue. The International Naturist Federation (INF-FNI) claims to represent about 450,000 members worldwide. But surveys and anecdotal reports indicate that tens of millions of people around the world engage in naturist behaviour. Conservatively estimated, this again points to a membership ratio of 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000. The deeper truth? Most naturists simply don’t join. Why Aren’t Naturists Joining?
Recent peer-reviewed studies (Soylemez et al., 2023–2025) offer insight:
• Naturists fear social stigma and professional consequences.
• Many dislike the bureaucracy and exclusivity of existing federations.
• Federation culture is often perceived as dated, conservative, and unwelcoming.
One study found that over 67% of participants had engaged in naturist activities, but avoided formal affiliation entirely. The message is clear: the naturist majority is silent, but active.
Why NaturismRE Exists
NaturismRE is not a federation. It is a movement:
• Open to all, without hierarchy or gatekeeping.
• Backed by real data, real stories, and modern outreach.
• Committed to creating legal protections, social acceptance, and a global naturist identity.
We also want to emphasise: we respect the work done by existing federations. They have played a role in building safe spaces and advocating for naturist rights. Many still hold significant influence within the industry and venues. However, it is now evident that they do not represent the majority.
With tools like the Global Naturist Index, legislative advocacy, the Modriaty Resort project, and decentralised participation via AI tools like Aletheos, NaturismRE is building a new era of naturism.
The Call to Action
The statistics no longer lie:
Less than 1 in 500 naturists are represented.
The rest are waiting for something better.
That’s why NaturismRE was created. Not to replace, but to finally represent. Not to control, but to connect. Not to gatekeep, but to resurge.
