This matrix compares recovery environments available to night-shift workers before work, after work and on days off according to their opportunities for interaction with daylight, fresh air, vegetation, natural landscapes and restorative environmental exposure.

Purpose

The Night Shift Health & Wellbeing Matrix™ provides a standardised framework for comparing recovery environments using the NRE Environmental Interaction Classification. It assists night-shift workers in identifying practical opportunities to improve recovery through greater environmental interaction outside working hours.

Scope

This matrix applies to workers who regularly perform overnight, rotating or extended evening shifts regardless of occupation. It evaluates recovery environments rather than workplaces, professions, employers or working conditions.

Standardised conditions

Unless otherwise stated, classifications assume:

• recovery before or after a completed shift
• lawful public access
• ordinary weather conditions
• normal physical capacity after work
• no acute illness or medical emergency
• ordinary seasonal conditions

Recovery opportunities may vary according to fatigue level, available time, transport, weather, family responsibilities and local access without changing the underlying environmental classification.

Important methodological boundary

This matrix does not evaluate occupations, employers, shift rosters, wages, fatigue management policies or sleep duration. Classification is based solely on the quality and accessibility of environmental interaction available during the recovery period. A worker with limited free time may still benefit from a higher-quality recovery environment than someone with more time but little environmental exposure.

Recovery environments are assessed through two separate measures: the quality of environmental interaction and the practical recovery opportunity they may provide around night-shift work. Accessibility is shown separately because a richer environment is not always the easiest option to use regularly.

Class E An exceptionally rich, continuous and accessible multi-habitat environment that clearly exceeds ordinary Class D settings.

How the Night Shift Matrix is classified

The environmental class and recovery opportunity are intentionally separated. The class measures the setting itself. Recovery opportunity considers how meaningfully that setting may support environmental contact around night-shift work, while practical accessibility reflects how regularly it can realistically be used.

Accessibility does not change the environmental class. A nearby backyard may be easier to use than a distant nature reserve, while the nature reserve may still provide the richer environmental setting.

Quality-assurance review: Every Class D and E entry was challenged before publication. Urban parks, botanical gardens, riversides, beaches and forests remain Class D because they provide strong but not automatically exceptional environmental interaction. Class E is restricted to an unusually rich and accessible multi-habitat setting that clearly exceeds those environments. Remoteness, travel distance, physical difficulty and fatigue do not increase classification.

How to read the Night Shift Matrix

The matrix separates environmental quality, recovery opportunity and practical accessibility. These measures should be read together rather than treated as interchangeable ratings.

Read the environmental class first

The A–E class describes the quality and richness of the environment itself. It does not change because a worker lives nearby, stays longer or finds the location convenient.

Then consider recovery opportunity

Recovery opportunity reflects the relative potential for restorative environmental contact around night-shift work. It is not a guaranteed medical or psychological outcome.

Accessibility remains separate

A nearby balcony or backyard may be easier to use regularly than a forest or nature reserve. Convenience affects practical use but does not increase the environmental class.

Timing matters

Some environments may be suitable before work or after waking, while more distant or demanding settings may be better reserved for days off or longer recovery periods.

Environmental class

Measures daylight, fresh air, vegetation, water, landscape continuity, biodiversity and separation from built disturbance.

Recovery opportunity

Describes the relative opportunity for restorative environmental contact, quiet movement, sensory variation and separation from enclosed settings.

Practical accessibility

Considers travel, opening hours, proximity, fatigue, available time and how realistically the environment can be used around night-shift routines.

Class A: Very limited Little or no direct interaction with daylight, fresh air, vegetation, natural views or changing outdoor conditions.
Class B: Limited Some daylight, exterior views or minor connection with outdoor conditions, while recovery remains predominantly indoors.
Class C: Moderate Direct outdoor access, open air, local vegetation or short neighbourhood settings provide a useful but incomplete environmental range.
Class D: High Mature vegetation, water, shade, sustained routes or meaningful separation from built surroundings provide strong environmental interaction.
Class E: Exceptional An unusually rich, continuous and accessible multi-habitat environment clearly exceeds ordinary Class D settings.

Factors affecting interpretation

The most useful recovery environment is not always the highest-class environment. A convenient Class C setting used regularly may provide a more realistic opportunity than a distant Class E environment that is rarely accessible.

Remoteness, physical difficulty and travel distance do not increase recovery value. They may instead reduce the practicality of an environment for a tired worker.

Suggested progression

Progression should begin with the most practical recovery opportunity and expand only where time, fatigue, transport and personal circumstances allow. It is not necessary to travel to a remote natural environment to begin.

Begin with natural light after waking

Use available daylight and natural views after waking where this fits your sleep schedule and personal circumstances.

Open access to fresh air

Use a balcony, terrace, doorway, courtyard or other suitable outdoor area for brief contact with fresh air and changing conditions.

Use a backyard or local outdoor area

Spend a short period sitting, standing or moving gently in an accessible outdoor space before work or after waking.

Add a short neighbourhood walk

Choose a quiet and familiar route with open sky, trees or gardens where fatigue, weather and personal safety permit.

Use a nearby urban park

Progress to a local park with shade, seating and established vegetation when time and access allow.

Include water where practical

Use an accessible river, lakeside or coastal path for a planned recovery session where travel demands remain reasonable.

Use woodland for longer recovery

Visit a forest or mature woodland after adequate rest or on a day off rather than treating a demanding trip as routine immediate post-shift recovery.

Plan richer environments in advance

Use botanical gardens, coastal environments or nature reserves as planned recovery opportunities rather than relying on them for every shift cycle.

Choose consistency over distance

Prioritise environments that can be used regularly. Frequent access to a suitable local setting may be more practical than occasional access to a distant exceptional environment.

Build a personal recovery pattern

Combine immediate home-based options, local outdoor access and occasional longer nature sessions according to shift timing, fatigue and personal needs.

The best recovery environment is one that is both suitable and usable

Environmental richness matters, but regular practical access matters too. Night-shift recovery can begin with daylight, fresh air and nearby vegetation, then expand toward richer environments when time, energy and circumstances allow.
