International Adaptation
The National Community Landscape Framework has been intentionally developed as a principle-based framework capable of adaptation by communities throughout the world. While initially prepared within an Australian context, its principles are not dependent upon any single legal system, climate, government structure or cultural model. The Framework encourages local adaptation while maintaining a common commitment to stronger communities, environmental stewardship and long-term public benefit.
Purpose
The purpose of this Guide is to assist governments, regional authorities, municipalities, organisations and communities in adapting the National Community Landscape Framework to their own legislative, environmental, cultural and administrative circumstances. The Framework should be viewed as a flexible foundation rather than a fixed implementation model.
Adaptation Principles
Respect Local Laws
Implementation should remain fully consistent with applicable legislation, planning regulations, environmental protections and public safety requirements.
Respect Local Environments
Species selection, landscape design and stewardship should reflect local climate, biodiversity, water availability and ecological conditions.
Respect Local Communities
Implementation should recognise local traditions, cultural expectations, Indigenous knowledge where appropriate and community priorities.
Maintain Core Principles
While implementation may vary, the Framework's guiding principles of environmental stewardship, community participation, resilience and public benefit should remain consistent.
Flexible Implementation
Communities may adopt the Framework in whole or in part. Some jurisdictions may initially implement Community Gardens, while others may focus on Community Orchards, Resource Recovery, biodiversity restoration or educational initiatives. The Framework does not require uniform implementation. It encourages practical adaptation according to local opportunity.
Sharing Knowledge
Communities implementing the Framework are encouraged to share practical experience, research findings, innovations and lessons learned. International collaboration strengthens the Framework by allowing successful ideas developed in one jurisdiction to inform future adaptation elsewhere. The Framework recognises that knowledge grows through cooperation rather than isolation.
Future International Development
As experience grows across different regions and countries, future editions of the Framework may incorporate additional guidance, case studies, regional adaptations and evidence generated through international collaboration. The Framework is intended to evolve through practical implementation while remaining accessible to communities of all sizes.
