Nudism vs Naturism
Understanding the Differences and Shared Values
Many people assume nudism and naturism mean the same thing. While they can overlap, they are fundamentally different in purpose and philosophy. Both appreciate the natural human body, but naturism extends far beyond nudity and does not depend on it.
Vad är nudism?
Nudism focuses primarily on being without clothes in recreational or social settings. Nudists enjoy the comfort and freedom of nudity, often in designated spaces such as beaches, resorts or clubs.
Viktiga aspekter av nudism:
• Recreational focus centred on the physical sensation of being nude
• Participation usually in specific environments where nudity is the norm
• Body acceptance and comfort in social nudity
Nudism is a practice. It is not inherently a philosophy. It is often misunderstood by the public due to media portrayal, but its purpose is non-sexual and body positive.
Vad är naturism?
Naturism is a philosophy and lifestyle, not simply a state of undress. NaturismRE defines naturism as a conscious, respectful way of living that deepens connection to nature, supports mental clarity and promotes personal integrity. Nudity can be part of naturism, but it is not a requirement.
Viktiga aspekter av naturism:
• Connection with nature whether clothed or unclothed
• Healthy, mindful and environmentally aware living
• Emotional balance and mental clarity
• Respect for oneself, others and the natural world
• Personal growth and freedom from unnecessary societal pressure
A naturist may practise grounding barefoot, meditating outdoors or reducing layers only when comfortable. Naturism begins in the mind. Clothing, or the absence of it, is secondary.
This reflects the Founder’s view that naturism is consciousness, not performance.
Clarifying a Common Misconception
Naturism does not require nudity
Over time the clothes-free world adopted the term naturism to distance itself from misconceptions around nudism. This blurred the boundaries between the two. NaturismRE restores the original meaning. Naturism is a philosophy and a lifestyle focused on harmony with nature, respect and inner clarity. A person may remain clothed and still be a naturist.
Nudity is an option, not the foundation.
Nudism and Naturism: Different Paths, Shared Interests
Although nudism focuses on being clothes-free and naturism on conscious living, they share common values.
Shared values include:
• body acceptance
• freedom from unnecessary shame
• appreciation of the human form
• respect for personal choice
At NaturismRE, both nudists and naturists are welcome. We simply recognise they are different traditions with different purposes.
NaturismRE stands firmly on the principle that naturism is not defined by nudity. Nudity is one possible expression of it.
Choosing Your Path
Your choice depends on what resonates with you.
You may identify as:
• a nudist if you enjoy being without clothes in recreational or social environments
• a naturist if you seek a deeper connection to nature, clarity, wellbeing and respectful living
• both, if you engage in nudist spaces while also practising naturist philosophy
• neither, yet still participate in the 11 Levels without ever being nude
Both lifestyles support body confidence, personal freedom and connection to the world. The most important thing is to choose the path that brings you balance, meaning and authenticity.
