The strongest psychological evidence currently available does not show that naturism is a universal health intervention. It does provide evidence that voluntary naturist activity can be associated with more positive body image, self-esteem and life satisfaction, and that some of these outcomes can improve following participation in naturist activities. The evidence base remains relatively small and requires careful interpretation. [R155–R159]
West's 2018 research in the Journal of Happiness Studies reported three studies examining relationships among naturist activity, body image, self-esteem and life satisfaction. [R155]
This work is particularly useful because it did not rely on one cross-sectional comparison alone. It combined:
A large online survey examining associations between naturist activity and psychological wellbeing.
A prospective study measuring participants before and after a real-world naturist event.
A further prospective study at another naturist event examining changes associated with participation.
In Study 1, greater participation in naturist activities was associated with greater life satisfaction, a more positive body image and higher self-esteem. Statistical analysis was consistent with positive body image helping to account for part of the relationship between naturist activity and wellbeing. [R155]
This finding supports an association. By itself, it cannot establish whether naturism produced the more positive body image or whether people who already felt better about their bodies were more likely to participate.
Studies 2 and 3 measured participants before and after real-world naturist activities. Participants showed improvements in measures of body image, self-esteem and life satisfaction following participation. [R155]
These before-and-after findings provide stronger evidence of change than the cross-sectional association because the same participants were measured across time.
The evidence supports saying that participation in the studied naturist activities was associated with improvements in measured psychological outcomes.
It does not justify expanding those findings into unmeasured claims about cardiovascular health, immunity, depression treatment, hormonal health or other physical or clinical outcomes.
Subsequent research by West and colleagues investigated whether exposure to non-sexual social nudity itself could affect body appreciation. Experimental work compared conditions involving non-sexual nudity with clothed conditions and reported evidence consistent with a positive effect on body appreciation. [R156][R157]
This is important because controlled designs can reduce some of the selection problems affecting studies of experienced naturists.
One mechanism proposed in this research is that seeing other ordinary nude bodies may contribute to greater appreciation of one's own body. This would be consistent with the ordinary-body-diversity hypothesis developed in Section 26.
However, mechanism evidence must be distinguished from outcome evidence. Even where body appreciation improves, researchers still need to establish why.
Naturist participation contains at least two forms of exposure: one's own body is more visible to other people, and other people's bodies are more visible to oneself.
These experiences may have different psychological consequences. Research attempting to separate them is therefore particularly informative for the NRE Visibility × Evaluation model.
Potentially relevant to self-consciousness, evaluation and body surveillance.
Potentially relevant to body norms, comparison and perceptions of ordinary body diversity.
The evidence concerns voluntary non-sexual nudity. It should not be transferred to sexualised environments, coercive exposure or situations in which participants lack privacy and meaningful consent.
Women participated in key naturism studies. Some research has also examined gender within analyses. Nevertheless, the evidence base is not yet large enough to conclude that every observed effect operates identically for women and men.
This distinction is especially important because earlier sections established that women report greater self-objectification on average and may encounter distinct appearance, sexualisation and safety pressures.
If women enter a naturist environment with greater appearance surveillance or concern about sexual evaluation, the trajectory of their response may differ from that of participants with lower initial concern.
Future research should therefore examine baseline body surveillance, appearance anxiety and prior experience rather than analysing only average post-event outcomes.
Across the available psychological naturism research, body appreciation or closely related positive body-image measures provide the clearest evidence relevant to the present guide.
This aligns with Part III, where positive body image was deliberately distinguished from merely reducing body dissatisfaction.
West's studies reported improvements or positive associations involving self-esteem and life satisfaction alongside body-image outcomes. [R155]
These findings are relevant to wellbeing but should remain attached to the measures and populations studied.
Naturist participation is associated with more positive body image, self-esteem and life satisfaction in some research.
Prospective studies report improvements in these outcomes following participation in naturist activities.
Controlled research provides evidence that non-sexual social nudity can improve body appreciation under studied conditions.
Mechanisms, durability, women-specific effects and generalisation across cultures and naturist settings require further evidence.
Section 27B will examine the methodological strength of these findings, the specific evidence concerning women, possible mechanisms and the precise conclusions NRE can responsibly carry forward into the guide.
The available research is strong enough to reject the claim that naturism's psychological effects are supported only by anecdote. It is not strong enough to treat voluntary social nudity as an established health intervention for women.
Cross-sectional, prospective and experimental studies answer different questions. Their findings become most useful when interpreted together without pretending that they provide identical levels of causal evidence.
Shows that naturist participation and positive psychological outcomes can occur together, but cannot determine which came first.
Shows that outcomes can change after participation within the same individuals, strengthening evidence that the experience may matter.
Can more directly test whether non-sexual social nudity changes a measured outcome under controlled conditions.
Determines whether findings persist across independent researchers, populations, cultures and settings.
The last category remains particularly important. A research area becomes substantially more secure when findings are reproduced across independent research teams and different populations.
Much of the modern psychological research directly examining naturist activity and positive body image has been produced by a relatively small number of researchers. This does not invalidate the findings, but it limits the degree of independent replication currently available.
Women have participated in the relevant studies, and the evidence is therefore directly relevant to women to some extent. However, the central literature has generally investigated mixed populations rather than building a large independent evidence base specifically around women's experiences of naturism.
The guide can responsibly state that women were included in research reporting positive body-image outcomes. It should be more cautious about claiming that naturism has a distinct or stronger effect for women.
A woman entering a naturist environment with high body surveillance may experience the setting differently from someone already comfortable with social nudity.
Existing research provides reasons to investigate this possibility, but not enough evidence to predict that women with poorer body image will necessarily benefit more.
Several mechanisms are compatible with the observed findings, but they do not currently have equal empirical support.
Naturist activities often occur socially. Positive outcomes may therefore reflect acceptance, belonging, recreation or supportive interaction alongside body exposure.
Calling those factors "confounders" does not make them irrelevant. If they are part of how real-world naturism operates, they may be components of the experience rather than methodological noise.
That remains one of the most important unresolved questions.
A well-managed naturist event with clear behavioural expectations cannot automatically represent every clothing-optional beach, private gathering, resort or informal online-organised event.
Privacy, participant behaviour, gender balance, alcohol, photography, crowding, sexualisation and safeguarding practices can all alter the social environment.
Immediate improvement after an event does not establish that the improvement persists for weeks, months or years.
Long-term follow-up would be required to determine whether changes endure, diminish or depend on continued participation.
Average improvement can conceal participants who experienced no change or a negative experience.
Women-specific research should therefore report distributions, adverse experiences, withdrawal and reasons for non-participation where possible, rather than reporting only the mean improvement among those who completed the activity.
People who decline naturist participation may differ systematically from those willing to participate. Excluding them from research can produce an evidence base that describes willing participants well while saying little about the wider population.
This is especially relevant to a women's guide because barriers such as body image, privacy, sexualisation, cultural norms and safety may influence who enters the study in the first place.
The naturism evidence does not justify assigning greater intrinsic health value to progressively lower levels of clothing.
Instead, voluntary non-sexual nudity can be treated as one possible body-environment configuration whose psychological outcome depends on context, individual preference and social conditions.
Naturism has a genuine, though still developing, psychological evidence base. Positive body-image findings have appeared across cross-sectional, prospective and experimental research, giving the hypothesis greater credibility than anecdote alone.
At the same time, research volume, independent replication, women-specific analysis, long-term follow-up and understanding of mechanisms remain limited.
Section 28 therefore performs the necessary counterweight: What naturism research does not establish.

Naturism-specific claims in this section are intentionally limited to psychological outcomes supported by the cited research. Mechanisms such as desexualisation, reduced comparison and reduced self-objectification remain hypotheses unless directly demonstrated.
Positive findings become scientifically useful only when their limits remain visible. The current naturism literature supports selected psychological outcomes under studied conditions. It does not establish that nudity is a universal health intervention, that every woman will benefit, or that more body exposure produces progressively greater wellbeing.
The central modern naturism studies discussed in Section 27 measured psychological outcomes including body image, body appreciation, self-esteem and life satisfaction. [R155–R159]
They did not establish reductions in cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, infectious disease or other major physical-health outcomes.
Ultraviolet B exposure contributes to cutaneous vitamin D synthesis, but ultraviolet radiation is also an established cause of skin damage and skin cancer. Health guidance balances these considerations rather than recommending unrestricted skin exposure. [R95][R160]
The naturism studies reviewed here do not demonstrate that nudity is required to maintain adequate vitamin D status or that exposing more skin produces a net health benefit.
The psychological evidence concerns particular experiences of voluntary non-sexual social nudity. It does not establish a continuous dose-response relationship in which wellbeing increases as clothing decreases.
Women have been included in naturism research, but the evidence base does not establish that every woman benefits from voluntary social nudity or that average effects observed in study samples apply to all female populations.
Women differ in body image, culture, previous experiences, privacy preferences, age, disability, trauma history, sexuality, religion, social environment and attitudes toward nudity.
Earlier sections showed good reasons to investigate women separately, including higher average self-objectification and distinct social pressures concerning appearance and sexualisation.
Those theoretical reasons do not themselves establish a larger naturism effect among women.
Positive body-image findings in non-clinical or community samples should not be converted into treatment recommendations for body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders or other clinical conditions.
Clinical treatment requires evidence specifically examining the relevant disorder, intervention, safety and outcomes.
Some people may become more comfortable with non-sexual social nudity after voluntary exposure. That possibility does not create an obligation to continue an experience that an individual does not want.
Discomfort can arise from unfamiliarity, but it can also reflect a stable preference, cultural boundary, privacy need or negative environmental condition.
The naturism evidence concerns voluntary participation. It cannot be transferred to forced nudity, coerced exposure, involuntary observation or situations in which a person cannot meaningfully leave.
Research findings from organised events cannot automatically be transferred to every beach, club, resort, private gathering or informal group.
Environments can differ in behavioural standards, privacy, photography rules, gender balance, crowding, alcohol use, safeguarding and response to misconduct.
Section 26 separated nudity from sexuality conceptually. That distinction does not make every participant incapable of sexualising another person.
Unwanted sexual attention, intrusive staring, harassment or other boundary violations remain possible and should be evaluated as environmental behaviours rather than dismissed as incompatible with the naturist label.
Exposure to diverse, non-idealised bodies is a plausible explanation for some positive body-image findings. But plausible mechanisms require direct testing.
Social acceptance, recreation, novelty, belonging or other factors may also contribute.
Repeated non-sexual body exposure may plausibly reduce the novelty or sexual salience of nudity for some participants, but the current evidence does not justify presenting this as an established universal psychological outcome.
Improvements measured immediately after an event do not establish persistence months or years later.
Long-term follow-up is required to determine whether effects endure, diminish or depend on continued participation.
A woman who chooses not to participate may obtain body acceptance, recreation, nature contact, social connection and wellbeing through many other pathways.
Existing naturism evidence does not establish that naturism is necessary for any of these outcomes.
A claim that has not been demonstrated should not automatically be declared false. Some questions simply remain unresolved.
Evidence of an effect is sufficiently established for a carefully bounded claim.
Available evidence does not justify making the claim.
Credible evidence supports the opposite conclusion.
Evidence is currently insufficient to determine the answer.
Section 28B will complete the falsification test by examining selection bias, publication bias, measurement limitations, generalisability, adverse experiences and the exact claims NRE should prohibit in its own health communications.
People who attend naturist activities or volunteer for research on social nudity are unlikely to represent a random sample of the wider population.
They may differ in prior attitudes toward nudity, body comfort, openness to new experiences, cultural background, previous naturist experience or willingness to be observed unclothed.
In longitudinal or event-based research, people who complete follow-up measures may differ from people who withdraw or fail to respond.
If participants with negative experiences are more likely to leave a study, estimates based only on completers could overstate favourable outcomes.
Participants may enter a naturist event expecting it to be liberating, challenging, enjoyable or uncomfortable. Expectations can influence subjective experience and self-report.
This does not make self-reported outcomes invalid. Body appreciation, self-esteem and life satisfaction are inherently psychological constructs that often require self-report. It means study design should consider expectancy when interpreting change.
Participants who understand the purpose of a study may infer the researchers' hypothesis and respond in ways influenced by what they believe is expected.
Blinding participants to the purpose of an obvious nudity intervention can be difficult, which makes comparison conditions and careful measurement especially important.
Research areas can become distorted when positive or statistically significant findings are more likely to be published than null or negative findings.
The relatively small naturism literature makes it difficult to assess publication bias with confidence.
Replication by independent research teams is particularly valuable where a research topic has advocacy, cultural or ideological implications.
Researchers can conduct rigorous work while personally supporting or opposing a practice, but independent replication reduces reliance on any one research programme.
NRE has an organisational interest in understanding and supporting non-sexual naturism. That makes evidence discipline more important, not less.
Positive findings should be reported accurately. Null, mixed or adverse findings must receive the same treatment.
Section 25 established that body visibility, modesty and naturism carry different social meanings across cultures.
A positive response among participants in a country with established naturist traditions may not predict the experience of women in a society where non-sexual social nudity is unfamiliar, highly stigmatised or legally restricted.
Body image, privacy, physical health and social circumstances change across the life course. Findings from one adult age group should not automatically be transferred to younger or older populations.
Part XI will examine these life-stage differences separately.
Research focused primarily on average positive outcomes can miss experiences such as unwanted attention, privacy violations, embarrassment, social pressure or increased body consciousness.
Future studies should therefore include measures capable of identifying negative as well as positive responses.
Improved body appreciation or another measured wellbeing outcome.
Participation produces little measurable difference.
Some outcomes improve while others worsen or remain unchanged.
Participation is associated with increased distress, discomfort or another negative outcome.
Psychological outcome scales alone cannot capture every relevant experience. Research should also consider harassment, unwanted photography, boundary violations or other environmental incidents where relevant.
A study in which no adverse event is reported provides information about that sample and setting. It does not establish that adverse events cannot occur elsewhere.
Likewise, the occurrence of an incident in one setting does not prove that all naturist environments are unsafe.
The evidence reviewed in Sections 27 and 28 allows clear communication boundaries for NRE publications.
Each movement to the right requires stronger evidence. This rule applies equally to claims favourable and unfavourable to naturism.
The naturism evidence is neither empty nor definitive. It supports carefully bounded psychological claims while leaving major questions unresolved concerning mechanism, duration, women-specific effects, cultural generalisation, adverse experiences and clinical relevance.
Section 29 now turns from outcomes to access: women-specific barriers to naturism. It will examine body image, sexualisation, privacy, safety, stigma, gender balance and cultural constraints without assuming that every barrier should be overcome.

The evidence categories Supported / Unsupported / Contradicted / Unknown and the NRE communication boundaries in this section are analytical tools for evidence governance. They are not clinical classifications.
Women's participation in naturism cannot be understood simply by asking whether women approve of nudity. Earlier sections identified several mechanisms capable of influencing participation: body surveillance, sexualisation, privacy, safety, stigma, cultural context and available choice. These mechanisms provide an evidence-based framework for investigating barriers without assuming that every woman experiences them or that every barrier should be overcome.
This distinction is fundamental. If a woman understands naturism, has a realistic opportunity to participate and independently decides that she does not want to, there is no need to reinterpret her decision as fear, repression, body shame or misinformation.
A barrier exists when another factor prevents or materially complicates a choice she would otherwise consider.
"I understand the option and it does not interest me."
"I might consider it if particular conditions were different."
"I would consider participating, but something prevents or substantially discourages me."
"I am being pressured to participate despite not wanting to."
This four-part distinction is an NRE analytical framework, not a validated psychological measure.
Parts III and VII established substantial evidence linking appearance evaluation, self-objectification and body surveillance with women's body-related experience. Physical-activity research also identifies body-image concerns as potential barriers to participation in settings where the body is visible. [R43][R53][R55][R98]
It is therefore plausible that some women may avoid naturism because they anticipate negative evaluation of their bodies.
A woman can have body dissatisfaction and still participate in naturism. Another woman can have high body appreciation and simply prefer clothing.
Body image should therefore be measured rather than inferred from participation status.
Section 22 established that women can experience sexual objectification and unwanted sexual attention independently of clothing state. Naturism may nevertheless increase concern for some women because greater body visibility can be perceived as increasing vulnerability to sexualised evaluation.
The relevant question is not whether naturism is intended to be non-sexual. It is whether the woman expects the actual environment and its participants to respect that distinction.
Section 14 established that physical visibility and digital visibility are different exposures. A woman may be comfortable being nude among people physically present while being unwilling to risk photography, identification or online distribution.
This concern can exist independently of body shame.
An unwanted image can potentially move beyond the original naturist environment into workplaces, family networks or online platforms. Technology-facilitated image abuse and manipulated imagery demonstrate why control over capture and distribution can matter to women's participation. [R77–R80]
The practical barrier may therefore be not nudity itself but uncertainty over whether contextual privacy can be maintained.
Part V established that perceived safety can influence women's use of public and recreational environments. The same mechanism can apply to naturist settings where a woman is unfamiliar with the location, participants or behavioural norms. [R104–R108]
Safety concerns can involve the journey to the location, isolation, behaviour within the environment or the ability to leave if she becomes uncomfortable.
A woman entering an unfamiliar social environment in which women are greatly outnumbered may interpret that environment differently from one with a more balanced participant population.
However, the current evidence base does not justify specifying an ideal male-to-female ratio or claiming that gender imbalance itself causes unsafe behaviour.
A numerically balanced environment can still contain harassment, while an imbalanced environment can maintain strong behavioural norms and be experienced as respectful.
Gender balance should therefore be investigated alongside behaviour, governance, privacy and participant experience.
NRE's SSM provides respondent evidence that fear of stigma is widely perceived as a barrier to naturist participation. Approximately 73.8% of SSM respondents agreed with that proposition.
For women, the relevant concern may include anticipated judgement from family, partners, employers or social networks, but women-specific prevalence should not be inferred from the overall SSM result.
Section 25 established that nudity, modesty and privacy carry different meanings across cultural contexts. A woman may therefore face very different social consequences for naturist participation depending on family, community, religion, workplace and country.
Cultural difference should neither be dismissed as ignorance nor treated as an automatic prohibition on individual choice.
Participation in social nudity can affect intimate relationships when partners hold different boundaries or interpretations concerning nudity, sexuality and exclusivity.
Relationship negotiation is not inherently coercive. Partners routinely discuss activities that affect shared expectations. The autonomy issue arises when pressure, threats or manipulation replace meaningful discussion.
The woman decides whether naturism interests her.
Partners discuss boundaries and concerns affecting the relationship.
A partner attempts to overcome a woman's unwillingness.
A partner attempts to control participation through coercive consequences.
A woman who has previously experienced harassment, privacy violation or another negative event may reasonably evaluate a new environment differently.
NRE should not interpret heightened caution as irrational resistance requiring correction.
Distance, transport, cost, opening times, disability access, childcare and lack of nearby lawful venues can all prevent participation regardless of a woman's attitude toward nudity.
This is important because interpreting low female participation entirely through body image or stigma can obscure ordinary practical barriers.
This multidimensional barrier model is an NRE synthesis of the evidence developed throughout the guide. It requires direct testing before individual components can be ranked by importance.
Section 29B will examine how barriers should be measured, distinguish removable barriers from legitimate personal boundaries, integrate NSNMS cautiously, and establish why increasing female participation cannot itself be the measure of success.
Identifying a possible barrier is not enough. A credible women's framework must determine whether the woman actually wants the underlying activity, whether the barrier changes her behaviour, and whether changing the environment would alter her choice.
Consider two women who both decline a naturist activity. One has no interest in social nudity. The other is interested but believes photography controls are inadequate.
Their observed behaviour is identical, but only the second example identifies a potentially removable barrier.
Body discomfort, appearance anxiety, unfamiliarity or another individual concern.
Privacy, participant behaviour, facilities, accessibility, governance or physical safety.
Anticipated stigma, employment consequences, family reaction or community judgement.
Distance, cost, transport, time, childcare, disability access or lack of suitable locations.
This classification is an NRE analytical structure. A single barrier may operate across more than one category.
Some barriers are environmental failures, such as inadequate privacy protection or harassment. Others may reflect personal boundaries that should be respected rather than treated as problems.
A woman who does not want to be nude around strangers has established a legitimate personal boundary. The purpose of a women-supportive framework is not to eliminate that boundary.
Section 27 found promising evidence that voluntary non-sexual social nudity can improve positive body-image outcomes under some studied conditions.
That evidence should not be reversed into the assumption that a woman reluctant to participate has a body-image deficit requiring correction.
Unlike some cultural or personal preferences, environmental privacy controls can often be changed directly.
Clear rules concerning image capture rather than assuming participants understand unwritten norms.
Separate consent for capture, publication and secondary use.
Credible response when privacy rules are breached.
Recognition that physical participation does not create permission for online distribution.
Organisations cannot guarantee that no participant will ever behave inappropriately. They can establish clear expectations, provide reporting routes and respond to boundary violations.
The relevant measure is therefore not whether an environment claims to be respectful, but whether behavioural standards operate in practice.
Women-only introductory sessions could theoretically reduce concerns about sexual evaluation or unfamiliar mixed-sex environments for some participants.
Other women may prefer mixed environments and regard women-only arrangements as unnecessary.
Where lawful and environmentally appropriate, clothing-optional settings can allow individuals to control their own degree of body exposure rather than requiring immediate full nudity.
Whether this reduces barriers or instead increases comparison and social uncertainty remains an empirical question.
Some reluctance may arise because a woman does not know what happens at a naturist venue, what behaviour is expected, whether clothing is optional, how privacy works or whether she can leave easily.
Clear pre-participation information can reduce uncertainty while preserving the decision not to attend.
NRE's Non-Sexual Nudity Motivations Study (NSNMS) was designed to investigate motivations, experiences and attitudes concerning non-sexual nudity.
Its value to this guide lies in the possibility of examining why respondents participate, what they experience and which barriers or motivations they report.
If NRE reports women's motivations from NSNMS, the analysis should use respondents identified within the relevant female category and report the denominator for each item.
Missing responses, branching and differing item counts should remain visible rather than using one total sample number as the denominator for every question.
If a respondent says she participates in naturism to improve body confidence, that establishes a reported motivation.
It does not establish that her body confidence actually improved. Outcome research requires an outcome measure.
A woman reporting that naturism helped her body image provides meaningful experiential evidence. It does not by itself isolate naturism as the cause of the change.
NRE can report both kinds of evidence as long as their status remains clear.
If NRE removes privacy failures, reduces harassment, improves information and provides more participation options, women may still choose not to participate.
That outcome is compatible with success if their decision is more informed and less constrained.
Women understand what the environment and activity actually involve.
Privacy, behaviour and safeguarding expectations are credible.
Participation or non-participation reflects the woman's own preference.
She can increase, reduce or stop participation without penalty.
Body image, sexualisation, privacy, safety, stigma and cultural context are credible variables affecting women's body-related participation more broadly.
SSM respondents widely perceived fear of stigma as discouraging naturist participation.
The relative importance of particular barriers specifically to women's naturist participation.
Removing a barrier should increase available choice rather than predetermine participation.
Women's participation in naturism can potentially be constrained by psychological, environmental, social and practical variables. But those variables only become barriers when they interfere with an option the woman might otherwise choose.
Section 30 completes Part VIII by asking which environmental conditions may change the experience of voluntary non-sexual nudity, bringing together autonomy, privacy, behaviour, safety, body evaluation and social context.

The cited external and NRE-generated evidence supports investigation of their component variables but does not independently validate the integrated frameworks or establish the prevalence of particular barriers among women generally.
The evidence reviewed in Part VIII does not support treating nudity as an intervention whose effects are independent of context. Voluntary non-sexual social nudity occurs inside an environment, and that environment can alter whether the experience involves autonomy, privacy, acceptance, evaluation, uncertainty or unwanted attention.
Section 13 established that autonomous and controlled experiences should not be treated as psychologically equivalent. The naturism research reviewed in Sections 27 and 28 concerns voluntary participation. [R72–R76][R155–R159]
This makes meaningful choice a boundary condition for applying the existing positive evidence.
Initial agreement to enter an environment should not be treated as permanent consent to remain nude, stay at the event or accept every interaction occurring there.
A woman may cover herself, leave, decline an activity or change her mind without invalidating her earlier decision to participate.
Section 14 established that physical presence, photography and distribution are separate decisions. This distinction becomes particularly important when participants are unclothed.
A woman may experience body visibility very differently when she knows that photography is controlled than when she believes an image could be captured and circulated without her agreement.
Section 26 established that nudity and sexuality are conceptually separable. But the experienced environment also depends on how participants behave.
Intrusive staring, sexual comments, persistent propositions, non-consensual touching or photography can alter the social meaning of an environment regardless of its stated naturist purpose.
Part III established strong links among appearance evaluation, self-objectification and body surveillance. Section 24 therefore proposed separating body visibility from body evaluation. [R43][R51][R53]
Naturist environments offer a particularly useful setting in which to test that distinction because body visibility is high while the degree of appearance evaluation can vary.
Bodies are highly visible and participants experience substantial comparison, ranking, staring or sexual evaluation.
Bodies are highly visible while appearance evaluation is socially de-emphasised.
Naturist environments can expose participants to bodies differing in age, size, shape and other visible characteristics. This may provide a different comparison environment from highly selected or edited body imagery.
Whether that diversity improves body image likely depends partly on how participants respond to it and whether the environment encourages comparison.
A woman who experiences acceptance while her body is visible may interpret that experience differently from one who merely sees other nude bodies.
This creates another unresolved mechanism: whether positive outcomes arise partly from social acceptance rather than body exposure alone.
First-time participants and experienced naturists may not experience the same level of novelty, self-consciousness or uncertainty.
Research should therefore distinguish prior experience rather than treating all participants as though they begin from the same baseline.
Some women may prefer to enter a clothing-optional environment while retaining clothing initially, reducing coverage later only if they independently choose to do so.
Other women may prefer a clear nude-only environment because mixed clothing states could increase feelings of being observed.
Section 29 identified gender balance as a plausible variable affecting comfort or perceived safety. Its influence cannot be separated from participant behaviour and governance.
A women-only introductory setting, a balanced mixed group and a male-majority environment may produce different experiences for some women, but the direction and magnitude of those differences require direct evidence.
Naturism does not remove ordinary environmental-health requirements. Temperature, UV radiation, wind, terrain, insects, hygiene and other physical conditions can determine whether reduced clothing is appropriate.
A private controlled venue, a designated beach and an isolated informal location may provide different levels of privacy, supervision, accessibility and ability to seek assistance.
Research should therefore report the setting rather than treating "naturism" as a location-independent exposure.
Where alcohol is present, it can affect judgement and behaviour. This is not unique to naturism, but it may be relevant to environments that depend strongly on respect for personal boundaries.
This interaction model is an NRE synthesis. It identifies variables for research and environmental assessment rather than calculating a validated wellbeing score.
Section 30B will complete Part VIII by turning these variables into a testable environmental framework, defining minimum conditions for women-supportive voluntary naturism and identifying the precise point at which the evidence permits, or prevents, a positive wellbeing claim.
The evidence reviewed across Part VIII does not identify one ideal naturist setting for all women. It does, however, support a more rigorous conclusion: positive psychological outcomes from voluntary social nudity should only be interpreted within environments that preserve autonomy, privacy, behavioural boundaries and physical safety.
Women must be able to decide whether to enter, whether to undress, how long to remain and whether to leave.
Pressure from partners, organisers, peers or other participants is incompatible with the evidence base used to support voluntary naturist participation.
The distinction between nudity and sexuality must operate in practice. A woman's clothing state should not alter expectations concerning consent, touch, sexual propositions or ordinary interpersonal respect.
Photography, recording and image distribution should be governed by clear rules and meaningful consent.
A woman should not have to choose between participating physically and accepting uncontrolled digital visibility.
Respectful conduct cannot depend entirely on informal expectations. Participants should understand what behaviour is unacceptable and what happens when boundaries are breached.
Behavioural rules are communicated before or at entry.
Participants know how to raise concerns without unnecessary confrontation.
Boundary violations are addressed consistently rather than normalised.
Repeated issues are used to improve environmental design and governance.
Naturist practice does not override environmental-health principles. UV radiation, temperature, terrain, insects, hygiene, occupational hazards and other physical risks remain relevant.
The most plausible body-image benefit occurs where body visibility is not accompanied by strong appearance evaluation.
This does not require people to ignore bodies completely. It requires that ordinary participation not depend on being attractive, youthful, slim, muscular or otherwise aesthetically compliant.
Where the setting permits clothing choice, women should not be treated as incomplete participants because they remain partially clothed.
Where a particular setting is nude-only, that requirement should be communicated clearly before participation so entry remains informed and voluntary.
A women-supportive environment should allow a participant to cover, pause or leave without ridicule, pressure or interrogation.
Even when all eight conditions are present, some women may experience no benefit or may simply dislike naturism.
The conditions define a stronger environment for autonomous participation. They do not create a therapeutic guarantee.
The preceding evidence can now be organised into six core variables for future research.
Researchers can then examine whether variation in these conditions predicts variation in body appreciation, surveillance, comfort, willingness to return or other outcomes.
A credible study should not measure only positive body-image outcomes. It should also be able to detect increased anxiety, discomfort, sexualisation, privacy concerns or withdrawal.
Increased body appreciation, comfort or wellbeing.
No meaningful psychological change.
Positive change in one domain and negative or neutral change in another.
Increased distress, surveillance, discomfort or another negative response.
The strongest future research should include women who are interested, uncertain and uninterested, not only women willing to attend naturist events.
Understanding why women decline participation is necessary to separate preference from environmental barriers.
The evidence reviewed in Sections 26 to 30 supports three conclusions with different levels of certainty.
Naturism can now be placed inside the wider women's health framework without exaggeration.
It is one voluntary body-environment configuration for which a small but meaningful psychological evidence base exists. Its potential value appears to depend less on nudity in isolation than on the interaction of visibility, evaluation, autonomy, privacy, social behaviour and individual preference.
Part IX now moves from evidence review to application of NRE frameworks to women, beginning with Section 31: The NRE 11 Levels.

The eight minimum environmental conditions and the Choice × Privacy × Behaviour × Evaluation × Safety × Accessibility model are NRE-developed analytical and research frameworks. They organise variables supported by the preceding evidence but have not yet been independently validated as a naturist wellbeing assessment instrument.
The NRE 11 Levels provide a structured way to describe different relationships between the body, clothing and environment. They should not be interpreted as a progression from unhealthy to healthy, inhibited to liberated or clothed to psychologically advanced.
Earlier sections established that clothing can serve thermal, protective, cultural, occupational, social and personal functions. The amount of clothing appropriate to a woman therefore depends on the environment, activity, conditions and her own preference.
No evidence reviewed in this guide establishes that progressively reducing clothing produces progressively greater health or wellbeing.
The practical value of the 11 Levels is that they allow NRE to describe an exposure state without attaching assumptions about the woman.
For example, removing shoes, wearing lighter clothing or choosing no clothing at all are different physical configurations. The framework should record those differences while leaving motivation and meaning to separate analysis.
A low-clothing state may be appropriate in a warm, shaded and private environment while being unsafe under intense ultraviolet radiation, cold conditions or hazardous terrain.
Likewise, more clothing can provide valuable thermal, occupational or environmental protection in one setting while increasing heat strain in another.
Clothing can affect temperature, mobility, privacy, protection, cultural expression, appearance and social participation simultaneously. For women, these functions may also interact with body surveillance, modesty expectations or anticipated sexual evaluation.
The 11 Levels are useful only if they allow those variables to remain visible rather than reducing the analysis to body coverage alone.
Thermal comfort, UV protection, terrain, hygiene and task safety.
Comfort, identity, privacy and individual preference.
Cultural expectations, dress norms and participation in shared environments.
Body confidence, appearance evaluation, autonomy and perceived social judgement.
Women who prefer greater coverage should not be described as less confident, less body-positive or less committed to naturism.
Likewise, women who prefer less coverage should not be treated as more liberated, more authentic or more psychologically advanced.
A woman may move toward less clothing because she is warmer, wants greater sensory contact with the environment or simply prefers it.
She may later add clothing because temperature changes, she wants privacy, she enters another setting or she changes her mind.
The language of "levels" can unintentionally imply progression toward an endpoint. This guide therefore makes the interpretation explicit: the woman's preferred level is not an unfinished stage on the way to another level.
Although progression is not required, gradual change can be useful for women who actively want to explore different relationships with clothing and environment.
The important distinction is that gradual participation is available, not expected.
Not every lower-clothing state is naturism. A woman may remove footwear at home, wear minimal clothing during exercise or swim with reduced coverage without identifying as a naturist.
Naturism requires additional contextual interpretation involving voluntary non-sexual social nudity or related practice, not simply a point on the clothing scale.
A woman may find one or more low-clothing environments comfortable without wanting to call herself a naturist.
Conversely, a woman may identify with naturist principles while choosing more clothing in particular environments because of weather, safety, culture or personal preference.
Part VIII found evidence that voluntary non-sexual social nudity can contribute to positive body-image outcomes under some studied conditions. That evidence does not establish that each increase in body exposure produces a corresponding increase in body appreciation.
The 11 Levels should therefore never attach predicted psychological outcomes to individual levels without direct evidence.
Sections 12 to 14 established that autonomy, control and privacy can alter psychological experience.
A woman freely choosing substantial coverage may therefore experience greater autonomy than a woman pressured toward greater exposure, regardless of which woman occupies the numerically higher NRE level.
Section 25 established that body coverage can carry cultural, religious and personal meanings. The 11 Levels must therefore remain culturally neutral.
Greater coverage should not be coded as a barrier unless the woman herself reports that it prevents an activity she wishes to undertake.
A woman may need footwear, compression garments, mobility equipment, medical devices, protective clothing or other body-related support. These should not lower an assessment of body-environment wellbeing merely because they increase coverage.
The relevant question is whether the configuration supports her health, safety, activity and preference.
On their own, the 11 Levels can describe body exposure but cannot determine whether that exposure is health-supportive.
Environmental context must be added.
Section 31B will complete the women-specific application of the 11 Levels by defining how the framework should be used, what it should never infer and how it connects directly to Section 32's NRE Health & Wellbeing Matrix.
The NRE 11 Levels are most useful when they describe the relationship between body exposure and environment without attempting to diagnose the woman, predict her wellbeing or prescribe a destination.
The first task is descriptive. What clothing, footwear or other body coverage is actually present?
This should be recorded without attaching assumptions about motivation, confidence, morality, sexuality or health.
The same exposure level can function differently in a home, urban park, forest, beach, workplace or swimming environment.
Environmental assessment therefore follows rather than being inferred from the exposure level itself.
Home, workplace, urban environment, green space, blue space or another location.
Temperature, UV, wind, humidity, terrain, air quality and other relevant physical variables.
Resting, walking, gardening, working, swimming, socialising or another activity.
Privacy, behaviour, evaluation, cultural norms and personal safety.
Body exposure that is freely chosen and exposure that is imposed should not be treated as equivalent.
The same applies to greater coverage. Clothing can be protective and freely preferred, or it can be imposed in ways the individual experiences as unnecessarily restrictive.
Autonomy does not make environmental hazards disappear. Protective requirements may legitimately limit clothing choice where there is a real risk.
Some clothing requirements have clear safety, hygiene or operational purposes. Others may reflect convention, organisational culture or social expectations.
NRE does not assume that every conventional dress rule is illegitimate. It asks whether restrictions affecting body autonomy have a defensible purpose proportionate to the setting.
Part VIII established that body exposure and sexuality are separate variables.
A low-clothing or no-clothing level therefore cannot be coded as more sexual than a higher-coverage level merely because more skin is visible.
A woman at a high-exposure level may still experience body anxiety. A woman at a high-coverage level may have excellent body appreciation.
Body-image constructs require their own measures.
Freedom depends on available options and meaningful choice, not simply on body exposure.
A woman required to be nude is not necessarily freer than a woman freely choosing to remain dressed.
No reviewed evidence supports converting an exposure level into a general health score.
Health relevance emerges only after the level is interpreted against environmental conditions, activity, individual characteristics and the evidence relevant to the outcome being considered.
One major advantage of the framework is methodological rather than therapeutic.
Research involving body exposure can become difficult to compare when studies use vague descriptions such as "lightly dressed," "partially nude" or "naturist." A structured exposure framework can help researchers describe conditions more consistently.
If the 11 Levels are eventually used in formal research, each level should have sufficiently precise criteria that independent researchers can classify the same condition consistently.
Reliability testing would then be required before the framework could be presented as a validated research classification.
This guide repeatedly separates the body-exposure state from the surrounding context.
That distinction can reduce a common analytical error: attributing an outcome to nudity when the actual causal variable may be temperature, social acceptance, exercise, nature exposure, privacy or another environmental condition.
Because women's clothing and bodily visibility can be subject to particularly strong social expectations, the 11 Levels should be interpreted alongside autonomy, privacy and evaluation.
This is not because women require a separate physical exposure scale. It is because the surrounding social variables may alter the experience and participation opportunities being investigated.
Provide a consistent vocabulary for body and clothing states.
Help compare environments or research conditions more precisely.
Demonstrate that different exposure configurations are legitimate options rather than predetermined stages.
Add body exposure as one variable within a broader environmental assessment.
The NRE 11 Levels become most useful when their ambition remains deliberately narrow. They describe body exposure and allow that variable to be analysed consistently alongside environment, activity, autonomy and safety.
Section 32 now applies the second major NRE framework: the NRE Health & Wellbeing Matrix, where body exposure becomes one variable among environmental, behavioural, temporal and individual factors.
Framework evidence record for Section 31
NRE 11 Levels is an NRE-developed classification framework for describing relationships between body exposure, clothing and environment.
The evidence used throughout Sections 4–30 supports the need to distinguish body exposure from thermal conditions, ultraviolet risk, occupational protection, autonomy, privacy, sexual meaning, body-image outcomes and cultural context.
The NRE 11 Levels are not currently presented in this guide as a validated clinical, psychological or public-health scale. Their use here is descriptive and analytical. Any future use as a formal research instrument should include operational definitions, reliability assessment and appropriate validation.
The NRE Health & Wellbeing Matrix starts from a simple proposition: health-related experience emerges from an interaction between the person and the environment rather than from clothing, nature, activity or any other variable in isolation.
Applied to women, the Matrix brings together evidence developed across this guide without creating a separate biological rulebook for female bodies.
Section 31 established that the NRE 11 Levels describe body exposure. They cannot determine whether a particular exposure state is appropriate or health-supportive.
The Matrix adds the surrounding variables required for that assessment.
The NRE Matrix spans environments ranging from homes and workplaces to urban parks, beaches, forests, mountains and other natural settings.
This matters because environmental health opportunities do not begin only when a woman reaches wilderness.
Indoor air, daylight, thermal conditions, privacy, recovery and access to outdoor space can all matter.
Task, PPE, ergonomics, scheduling, psychosocial conditions and recovery interact with the physical environment.
Walkability, green space, noise, air quality, heat and perceived safety influence practical use.
Green and blue spaces can provide recreation and restoration while also introducing weather, UV, terrain and water hazards.
A location does not have one permanent health profile. Temperature, humidity, ultraviolet radiation, wind, rain, air pollution, noise and light can change across hours, seasons and events.
This is why the Matrix should assess conditions at the relevant time rather than assigning a fixed health value to a place.
Section 7 established the importance of circadian timing, while Sections 15 to 20 showed that daylight, heat, safety, transport and social activity can change substantially according to time.
A beach at midday, a park at dawn and a workplace at 03:00 should not be treated as equivalent exposures merely because the geographical location remains unchanged.
Sitting, walking, running, gardening, swimming and working create different metabolic, thermal and safety requirements.
An environment suitable for quiet rest may not be appropriate for strenuous activity under the same weather conditions.
Sex and gender can modify particular exposures or participation patterns, but "woman" should not be treated as a single physiological setting.
Age, body size, pregnancy, menopause, disability, health status, acclimatisation, medication, physical capacity and individual preference can all alter relevant interactions.
Earlier sections identified circumstances in which pregnancy, postpartum recovery, menopause and ageing can alter thermal experience, sleep, physical capacity or other health considerations.
These are contextual modifiers, not separate categories of female worth or capability.
A purely physical model would miss many of the strongest women-specific findings developed in this guide.
Privacy, harassment, appearance evaluation, stigma, cultural context and perceived safety can determine whether an otherwise supportive physical environment is realistically usable.
Control over observation, photography and disclosure.
Degree to which appearance or sexuality becomes salient to participation.
Objective hazards and the individual's experienced ability to use the environment.
Social meanings and expectations surrounding body, activity and participation.
The clothing/exposure axis can interact with thermal comfort, ultraviolet radiation, activity, privacy and personal preference.
It should never dominate the assessment simply because NRE also works in naturism.
Consider a woman walking through an urban park on a mild morning. Potentially relevant variables include physical activity, vegetation, temperature, UV, air quality, noise, accessibility and perceived safety.
Her clothing state is relevant primarily through comfort, protection and preference. It should not be assumed to determine the health value of the walk.
At a beach, the Matrix may add water conditions, swimming competence, ultraviolet exposure, heat, wind, privacy and social context.
A lower-clothing state may be physically comfortable while increasing UV exposure. A more covering state may improve UV protection while affecting thermal comfort differently.
In a workplace, task and occupational hazards may dominate the clothing decision. PPE requirements take precedence where necessary.
Thermal comfort, uniform design, ergonomics, workload and psychosocial conditions can then be assessed around those safety requirements.
In a lawful and physically suitable naturist environment, the Matrix can integrate body exposure with choice, privacy, behavioural norms, appearance evaluation and environmental conditions.
The naturism evidence from Part VIII can then be applied only within the boundaries established by the research.
An environment can offer an opportunity associated with wellbeing without creating an obligation to use it.
Green space can be available without requiring every woman to visit it. A swimming environment can be available without requiring swimming. A naturist environment can be available without requiring nudity.
One of its strongest potential uses is identifying why a theoretically supportive environment is not practically usable.
This connects directly with NRE's Health Opportunity Cost hypothesis, while retaining the requirement to measure substitution before claiming that an opportunity has actually been lost.
Section 32B will turn this into a practical women-specific Matrix protocol, define evidence grading and safeguards, and establish what the Matrix can and cannot legitimately claim.
The NRE Health & Wellbeing Matrix becomes useful only if its conclusions can be traced back to evidence and clearly identified assumptions. The following protocol therefore separates environmental description, individual circumstances, evidence and NRE interpretation.
Avoid broad labels where more specific information is available. "Outdoors" is not one environment, just as "home" or "workplace" is not one exposure.
Only modifiers relevant to the particular health question should be included.
Age, pregnancy, menopause, disability, physical capacity, acclimatisation, health status or medication may matter in one assessment and be irrelevant in another.
The NRE 11 Levels can describe the clothing or body-exposure state without assigning a health value to it.
Footwear, protective equipment, medical devices and other functional items should remain visible in the assessment rather than being collapsed into a simple clothed-versus-nude distinction.
Where relevant, assess privacy, autonomy, perceived safety, appearance evaluation, cultural context and behavioural conditions.
These variables should only be included when they have a plausible relationship with participation or the health outcome being considered.
"Health" is too broad to grade responsibly without identifying the outcome.
Comfort, heat strain, cold stress or another temperature-related consideration.
Whether the environment supports safe and realistic movement.
Body appreciation, restoration, stress, autonomy or another defined construct.
UV, air quality, noise, nature contact or another measurable exposure.

These evidence labels are an NRE governance system for this guide. They are not a replacement for formal evidence-grading systems used in clinical guideline development.
An environment can contain both.
A beach may provide recreation and nature contact while creating ultraviolet and drowning risks. A forest may support walking and restoration while containing terrain or weather hazards.
Where evidence is incomplete, the Matrix should say so. Uncertainty is part of the result rather than a defect to conceal.
A health-supportive objective may be achievable through several environments or exposure states.
If a woman does not want one option, the Matrix should not imply that the health objective is therefore unavailable.
Temperature, weather, life stage, health status, activity and personal preference can change.
A Matrix assessment is therefore contextual rather than permanent.
The framework can organise evidence and environmental variables. It should not diagnose disease, prescribe clinical treatment or calculate individual medical risk unless separately validated and appropriately regulated for such purposes.
Where NRE Matrix pages use an A–E classification, the grade should summarise the defined body-environment configuration rather than imply a universal medical score.
The criteria underlying each grade should remain visible and reproducible.
Where evidence identifies sex or gender differences, the Matrix can incorporate them cautiously.
Where only general-population evidence exists, the Matrix should identify it as general evidence rather than presenting it as a female effect.
SSM, NSNMS, the Health & Wellbeing Survey and future NRE studies can contribute original evidence.
These data should remain clearly distinguishable from peer-reviewed external research and interpreted according to their sampling and methodology.
The NRE Health & Wellbeing Matrix can provide a structured way to analyse women's interactions with home, work, urban and natural environments, but only if it remains transparent about evidence, uncertainty and individual variation.
Section 33 now applies the third NRE framework: the Standardised Stigma Measure (SSM), examining what NRE's completed dataset can contribute to understanding women's social environment and where its methodological boundaries remain.

The women-specific Matrix protocol and evidence labels in this section are NRE-developed governance tools. The Matrix is not presented here as a validated diagnostic, clinical or individual risk-prediction instrument.
NRE's Standardised Stigma Measure (SSM) provides original survey data concerning attitudes toward non-sexual nudity, social judgement and perceived barriers to naturist participation. Its value to a women's guide depends on using the dataset for questions it can actually answer, while keeping respondent findings, women-specific findings and population estimates conceptually separate.
The SSM closed with 6,667 completed responses. That gives NRE a substantial observational dataset for examining attitudes and reported experiences within the respondent population.
Sample size matters, but sample size alone does not determine representativeness.
Approximately 91.9% of SSM respondents disagreed with associating non-sexual nudity with sexuality.
Approximately 73.8% agreed that fear of stigma discourages participation in naturism.
Approximately 45.3% disagreed that public nudity is inappropriate, 31.3% were neutral and 23.4% agreed.
The sexuality item concerns interpretation of non-sexual nudity. The stigma item concerns a perceived barrier to participation. The public-appropriateness item concerns social acceptability.
Combining them into one "support for naturism" score would erase meaningful distinctions between the constructs.
The contrast between the 91.9% sexuality result and the more divided public-appropriateness result illustrates an important point.
Respondents can distinguish whether nudity is sexual from whether they believe nudity is appropriate in a particular social setting.
Parts III and VII established that women's body visibility can intersect with appearance evaluation, sexualisation, privacy and stigma. The SSM provides NRE with a way to investigate the surrounding social attitudes rather than assuming them.
But the overall dataset only becomes evidence about women specifically when female respondents are analysed as a defined subgroup.
A subgroup percentage should be calculated from women who answered the relevant item, not from the entire SSM sample.
If branching, missing responses or differing question completion rates exist, the denominator should be reported for each analysis.
The SSM was conducted across multiple language versions and received a large proportion of responses through the French-language survey.
This means an overall percentage can be influenced heavily by the composition of the respondent pool. It should not be treated as though each country or language contributed equally.
A substantial share of SSM responses came from France. This gives NRE a large body of respondent data from that context, but it also means overall results can partly reflect the characteristics of that recruitment stream.
Country-specific analysis should therefore be separated from the global respondent summary wherever the sample permits it.
A French-language response does not automatically establish residence in France, just as an English-language response does not establish residence in an English-speaking country.
Geographic analysis should use the survey's geographic variable where available rather than infer location from language.
Women-specific analysis should use the categories actually collected by the SSM rather than reconstructing categories after the fact.
If the survey instrument does not support a particular sex- or gender-based distinction, the guide should state that limitation.
If women and men report different response proportions, the difference may reflect sampling, age, country, prior naturist experience or other variables.
Statistical testing and, where appropriate, multivariable analysis would provide stronger evidence than simply placing two percentages side by side.
People already familiar with naturism may hold different attitudes toward non-sexual nudity from people who have never participated.
If the SSM contains a suitable experience variable, women-specific analyses should consider whether attitudes differ between experienced participants and non-participants.
If women who anticipate greater stigma report lower willingness to participate, that would support an association between the variables.
A cross-sectional survey cannot by itself establish that stigma caused the lower willingness.
Are women more or less likely than other respondents to associate non-sexual nudity with sexuality?
Do women report different expectations concerning social judgement or participation barriers?
Do attitudes differ after accounting for country, age and prior experience?
Which reported attitudes are associated with women's willingness or reluctance to participate?
Section 33B will turn these principles into an SSM women-specific analysis protocol, define what NRE can publish responsibly, and establish how SSM findings should interact with external stigma research without being mistaken for equivalent evidence.
The SSM can become substantially more useful to women's research when subgroup analysis is performed transparently. The objective should not be to search for differences that support a predetermined narrative, but to determine whether women's responses genuinely differ and, where they do, what variables may help explain the pattern.
Analysis should begin from the original survey responses and coding rather than manually reconstructing categories from summaries.
Any recoding of response categories should be documented so another analyst can reproduce the result.
The group should be derived from the sex or gender item actually collected by the survey.
The analysis should report how the category was defined and avoid inferring demographic characteristics that were not collected.
For every reported percentage, calculate the denominator from eligible respondents in the analytic group who answered that item.
Missing responses should not disappear from the analysis. Where missingness is meaningful, NRE should report how many eligible respondents did not answer the item.
If missingness differs substantially between groups, that pattern may itself require investigation.
Descriptive statistics answer questions such as: "What proportion of female respondents selected this response?"
Inferential analysis asks whether an observed difference is sufficiently inconsistent with sampling variation under the chosen statistical model.
With a large sample, small differences can become statistically significant while remaining substantively minor.
Where group comparisons are performed, effect sizes and confidence intervals can provide more information than a p-value alone.
Women and men in the SSM may differ in age, geography, language, naturist experience or other measured characteristics.
Where the dataset supports it, adjusted analyses can investigate whether a sex- or gender-associated pattern remains after accounting for relevant measured variables.
NRE should avoid publishing unstable women-specific percentages for countries represented by very small numbers of respondents.
Where sample size is inadequate, combining countries merely to produce a larger number can also be misleading unless there is a defensible analytical reason for grouping them.
A large survey can generate hundreds of possible comparisons. Testing enough combinations will eventually produce apparently significant differences by chance.
Primary questions should therefore be defined in advance where possible, and exploratory analyses should be labelled exploratory.
If anticipated stigma is associated with lower reported willingness to participate, the result can support a relationship between those variables.
It does not establish whether stigma changed willingness, willingness influenced perceptions of stigma, or another variable affected both.
External research provides established concepts such as anticipated stigma, concealment, discrimination and social identity management. [R137–R140]
SSM provides NRE-specific observational data concerning attitudes surrounding non-sexual nudity and naturism.
Calling a measure "standardised" does not by itself establish psychometric validation.
If NRE intends the SSM to function as a formal measurement instrument, further work may include construct definition, reliability assessment, factor structure, convergent and discriminant validity, measurement invariance and replication.
Before interpreting a scale score as meaning the same thing across women and men, research should ideally examine whether the measurement structure functions comparably across groups.
The same principle applies to cross-language and cross-country comparisons. [R152][R153]
The SSM public-appropriateness result already demonstrates why this matters. A large neutral group and substantial disagreement between respondents should not be compressed into a binary supportive versus hostile narrative.
A respondent can oppose public nudity without holding discriminatory attitudes toward naturists.
Likewise, a respondent can accept naturism conceptually while still choosing never to participate.
Section 29 established the difference between preference and barrier. The same rule must govern SSM analysis.
Unless a respondent identifies stigma, fear or another obstacle, NRE should not infer the reason for her non-participation.

Section 34 now applies the NRE Non-Sexual Nudity Motivations Study (NSNMS) to women, separating motivations, experiences, barriers and outcomes so that respondent testimony is not mistaken for causal health evidence.

The women-specific SSM analysis protocol and publication template are NRE-developed research-governance frameworks. They are intended to strengthen future analysis and do not imply that the SSM has already completed formal psychometric validation.
The NRE Non-Sexual Nudity Motivations Study (NSNMS) can address a question that outcome research alone cannot answer: why do people choose, avoid or experience non-sexual nudity in particular ways? For this women's guide, its greatest value lies in separating motivation, experience, barrier and outcome rather than treating them as interchangeable evidence.
If a woman reports participating in non-sexual nudity because she wants greater body confidence, relaxation, freedom, nature connection or another experience, the response tells us something about her motivation.
It does not establish that the desired outcome occurred.
A respondent may report feeling more comfortable with her body after becoming involved in naturism. That experience is meaningful and can generate hypotheses.
However, an observational survey cannot isolate whether the change resulted from naturism, ageing, relationships, social support, changing body image or another factor.
Much health research begins with outcomes selected by researchers. A motivation study allows participants to identify what they themselves consider important about an activity.
This can reveal motivations that deserve subsequent measurement rather than assuming in advance that naturism is primarily about body image, sexuality, health or social belonging.
As with the SSM, women-specific NSNMS conclusions should use the respondents in the relevant female category who answered each item.
The denominator may differ between questions because of branching, missing responses or survey design.
A woman considering non-sexual social nudity for the first time may report different motivations from someone who has participated for decades.
Where the survey captures relevant experience variables, analyses should distinguish new, occasional and experienced participants rather than treating them as one motivational population.
If experienced participants report different motivations from newcomers, the difference could reflect change over time or self-selection.
Longitudinal research would be needed to distinguish those explanations.
A woman can participate for relaxation, swimming, body comfort, social connection and enjoyment of nature simultaneously.
Analysis should therefore avoid forcing complex motivations into one exclusive category where the questionnaire allows multiple responses.
Comfort, acceptance, body confidence or reduced concern about appearance.
Nature contact, thermal comfort, swimming or sensory experience.
Relaxation, freedom, authenticity or another subjective experience.
Community, companionship, belonging or shared recreation.
These categories are an NRE analytical grouping for interpretation. They should only be applied where they accurately represent the original NSNMS items and should not replace the questionnaire's actual wording.
Because this is a women's health guide, there is a risk of interpreting every female response through body image.
Women may participate for reasons unrelated to appearance. The survey data should determine the prominence of body-related motivations rather than the guide assuming it.
Respondents may use terms such as "freedom" or "liberation" to describe their experience. These are valid self-reported meanings but can refer to different underlying experiences.
Freedom might mean freedom from clothing, social expectations, appearance anxiety, heat, routine or something else entirely.
If women report nature connection as a motivation, that finding should not be converted into evidence that nudity itself increases the health effects of nature.
Parts V and VIII established that nature exposure and body exposure are separate variables.
Some respondents may value social contact, community or shared identity. These motivations should be distinguished from the direct psychological effects of body exposure.
If social connection contributes to wellbeing, the relevant mechanism may partly be belonging rather than nudity itself.
NSNMS is designed around non-sexual nudity. If respondents nevertheless report sexual associations, experiences or motivations in particular items, those responses should not be removed merely because they conflict with the intended construct.
Instead, they may identify ambiguity in interpretation, participant diversity or a need to refine measurement.
A motivations study becomes incomplete if it only investigates why people participate.
Women's reluctance, conditional participation and reasons for avoiding particular settings can be equally informative.
A woman reporting no interest in non-sexual nudity should not be coded as lacking motivation, having a barrier or needing education.
Words such as freedom, modesty, naturism, nudity, comfort and wellbeing can carry different connotations across languages.
Comparisons between NSNMS language versions should therefore follow the conceptual and measurement-equivalence safeguards established in Section 25.
Its strongest role may be identifying recurring motivations and barriers that can then be tested using prospective or experimental designs.
Section 34B will establish the women-specific NSNMS analysis protocol, show how motivations can be linked to later outcome research without overstating causation, and define what NSNMS can legitimately contribute to the final NRE women-supportive environment model.
NSNMS can provide valuable evidence about what respondents say motivates, discourages or shapes their experience of non-sexual nudity. Its strongest role is exploratory and explanatory. It can identify patterns and generate hypotheses that stronger longitudinal or experimental research can later test.
Analysis should begin with the questions respondents actually answered. Interpretive categories can be created later, but they should remain traceable to the original items.
This prevents a broad NRE concept such as "wellbeing" from being retroactively imposed on responses that measured something narrower.
Women-specific results should use the relevant female category collected by the survey and the valid responses for each item.
Motivations for practising non-sexual nudity and reasons for not practising it answer different questions.
Combining both populations into one average can obscure the distinction between attraction to an activity and barriers to an activity.
What motivates participation and what experiences are reported?
What conditions or barriers prevent an activity they might otherwise consider?
What information or conditions influence uncertainty?
Their lack of interest should remain a valid preference rather than being reclassified as a barrier.
A motivation concerns why the respondent participates. A perceived benefit concerns what she believes participation provides.
Both remain self-reported constructs and neither alone establishes objective or causal health improvement.
Where respondents can select more than one reason, percentages may legitimately total more than 100%.
NRE should explain this rather than forcing responses into artificial mutually exclusive categories.
The most common motivation may be less informative than recurring combinations of motivations.
For example, environmental enjoyment and relaxation may commonly occur together, while body acceptance and social belonging may form another pattern.
Such clusters should be explored statistically rather than invented from visual inspection alone.
If experienced participants report different motivations or experiences from newcomers, the difference may reflect selection, adaptation or both.
Cross-sectional NSNMS data cannot determine which explanation is correct.
A women's guide does not require every NSNMS item to become a women-versus-men contest.
Comparison is useful when it answers a substantive research question. Women-specific description can be valuable even without a male comparison group.
Age, country, language, prior experience and other measured variables can contribute to apparent group differences.
Adjusted analyses may therefore be appropriate where the sample and research question justify them.
If respondents report embarrassment, sexualisation, discomfort, privacy concern or social pressure, those responses belong in the evidence record alongside positive experiences.
Ambivalence is equally important. A woman may value some aspects of non-sexual nudity while disliking others.
A respondent might describe non-sexual nudity as freeing while also worrying about stigma or photography.
These responses are not necessarily inconsistent. They can describe different dimensions of the same experience.
Closed-response percentages show how often predefined answers were selected. Open-text responses can reveal motivations or concerns that researchers did not anticipate.
Qualitative analysis should use a documented coding method and preserve minority themes rather than selecting only illustrative comments that support NRE's position.
If NSNMS identifies body acceptance as a recurring perceived benefit, a subsequent study can measure body appreciation using an established instrument.
If relaxation emerges strongly, later research can select validated stress or recovery measures rather than asking only whether participants "felt relaxed."
If women identify uncontrolled photography as a barrier, NRE can test whether stronger privacy controls change willingness to participate.
If women identify uncertainty about behavioural norms, clearer pre-participation information can be evaluated.
An intervention that improves information or privacy may leave participation rates unchanged because women become more confident in choosing either participation or non-participation.
Detailed combinations of country, age, gender and unusual responses can create re-identification risk when subgroup numbers become small.
NRE should suppress, aggregate or otherwise protect small cells where publication could undermine respondent anonymity.
Why respondents say they participate or consider participation.
How respondents describe non-sexual nudity and its personal meaning.
Conditions respondents say discourage or prevent participation.

NSNMS can give NRE something the external naturism literature currently provides only incompletely: a large body of structured information about why respondents engage with non-sexual nudity and how they understand their own experiences.
Its strongest scientific value will come from using those responses to formulate better questions and then testing those questions with research designs capable of measuring change.
Section 35 now examines BELONG FREE, asking how a decentralised, no-membership participation model may interact with women's autonomy, stigma, identity, privacy and access without presuming that organisational non-membership itself improves health.

BELONG FREE is NRE's participation model built around a deliberately simple proposition: people can access information, resources and opportunities without being required to become members of NRE. Applied to women, its relevance is not that non-membership has been proven to improve health. Its relevance is whether reducing organisational obligations can expand meaningful choice.
Conventional organisations often connect access with membership: join the organisation, accept an identity, pay a fee or enter a formal structure in order to participate.
BELONG FREE separates those steps. A woman can read, learn, use resources or engage with an activity without automatically acquiring an organisational identity.
Section 23 established that anticipated stigma can influence disclosure and participation. If the label "naturist" carries social meaning that a woman does not want attached to her identity, requiring that label can create an additional participation cost.
Removing the identity requirement does not remove stigma surrounding the underlying activity, but it can separate use of a resource from formal affiliation.
Part IX established that clothing state, practice and identity are separate variables. A woman may enjoy a clothing-optional beach, non-sexual nude swimming or another activity without wanting naturism to become part of her social identity.
BELONG FREE accommodates that distinction.
NRE's health, wellbeing, education and research resources can be used without requiring agreement with every NRE programme or participation in naturism.
This matters to a women's health guide because health information should remain usable by women who have no interest in naturism.
Membership can involve fees, registration, personal information, recurring obligations or formal association. Removing those requirements can reduce administrative friction.
Whether that difference materially increases women's participation should be measured rather than assumed.
Section 14 established the importance of control over personal information. A participation model that does not require unnecessary personal details can reduce the amount of information an organisation holds about participants.
Data minimisation is especially relevant where the activity itself may be considered private by the individual.
Reducing registration requirements can protect privacy, but completely anonymous participation can create challenges where organisers need to manage misconduct or safety.
Different environments may therefore require different balances between data minimisation and legitimate safeguarding needs.
BELONG FREE allows people to self-organise rather than requiring NRE to control every local activity.
That can expand autonomy, but it also means NRE cannot automatically guarantee the behaviour, safety or governance of independent groups.
Informal or decentralised groups still require respect for consent, privacy, applicable law and the rights of other participants.
Removing organisational hierarchy does not remove interpersonal responsibility.
Some women may prefer informal peer activity with minimal structure. Others may feel more comfortable in a clearly governed environment with named organisers, rules and reporting procedures.
There is currently insufficient evidence to declare either model universally more women-supportive.
Lower administrative barriers and potentially greater flexibility.
Potentially clearer governance, accountability and behavioural expectations.
A woman may use NRE resources privately, participate informally, attend an established organisation, create her own group or choose none of these options.
A no-membership model cannot sensibly use membership totals as its principal measure of impact.
More relevant measures might include resource use, informed choice, perceived accessibility, privacy confidence, participation diversity or whether users report that unnecessary barriers have been reduced.
If the framework says women are free not to join but every message is designed to move them toward naturist participation, the practical experience may contradict the stated autonomy principle.
Section 35B will complete Part IX by defining how BELONG FREE can be evaluated, distinguishing organisational freedom from health outcomes, establishing safeguards for independent groups and bringing the five NRE frameworks together before the guide develops its women-supportive environment model in Part X.
BELONG FREE should be evaluated according to what it is designed to do: reduce unnecessary organisational barriers and preserve multiple routes to participation or non-participation. It should not be credited with psychological or health benefits merely because it removes membership.
NRE can examine whether users understand that resources are available without membership, subscription or organisational affiliation.
It can also investigate whether registration, fees, identity concerns or formal affiliation would otherwise discourage some users.
Do women understand that membership is not required?
Can resources be reached without unnecessary administrative barriers?
Can information be accessed without unnecessary disclosure of personal information?
Do users feel able to engage, disengage or remain private without pressure?
A rise in participation could indicate improved access, but it could also reflect marketing, demographic change or other factors.
Conversely, unchanged participation does not necessarily mean the framework failed if users report greater clarity, privacy or freedom to decide.
If NRE wishes to investigate whether reduced organisational barriers affect wellbeing, the relevant wellbeing outcome must be measured.
It would not be sufficient to observe that a no-membership resource receives more visitors and conclude that users became healthier.
Decentralised participation can allow people to organise activities without NRE controlling them. That independence should be communicated accurately.
NRE should avoid language that could reasonably imply that an independent gathering has been inspected, approved, supervised, insured or certified by NRE where none of those things has occurred.
Local organisers remain responsible for understanding and complying with applicable law, land-use rules, venue requirements, safety obligations and other responsibilities relevant to their activities.
NRE educational material should not be presented as legal approval for an activity or location.
Decentralisation does not prevent NRE from publishing general principles concerning consent, privacy, photography, respectful behaviour and voluntary participation.
Those principles can inform independent organisers without implying that NRE monitors compliance.
Independent groups can reduce uncertainty by providing clear information about location, clothing expectations, photography, behavioural rules, facilities, accessibility and who is organising the activity.
This supports informed choice without requiring NRE to certify the environment.
Part IX has deliberately kept the frameworks separate because each answers a different question.

The Matrix can describe the surrounding conditions, while independent psychological or health measures determine whether any outcome changes.
A framework becomes scientifically useful only when evidence can challenge it.
If future research shows that a proposed Matrix relationship does not predict outcomes, that a presumed barrier is unimportant, or that a BELONG FREE intervention does not improve accessibility, the framework should be revised.
NRE now has five complementary frameworks that can be applied to women's health and wellbeing without collapsing them into one model.
Together they can describe body exposure, environmental conditions, stigma-related attitudes, motivations and participation structures. None independently determines health.
Part X now uses the evidence accumulated across the entire guide to construct an integrated NRE model for women-supportive environments.

At the beginning of this guide, NRE proposed a provisional framework for evaluating women-supportive environments: C.A.R.E.S. — Choice, Autonomy, Respect, Environment and Safety. Sections 1 to 35 now provide enough evidence to test whether those components remain defensible.
Choice appears repeatedly across the evidence. Women may choose clothing, activities, environments, disclosure, participation, social identity and whether to engage with naturism.
Sections 12 to 14 showed that perceived control and autonomy can alter psychological experience. Sections 29 and 30 further demonstrated why voluntary and involuntary body exposure cannot be treated as equivalent. [R72–R76]
Part V demonstrated that an option can exist while remaining difficult to use because of transport, safety, time, accessibility or social conditions.
Part VI showed the same problem with recovery: technically free time may be occupied by commuting or unpaid work.
Choice and autonomy are closely related, creating a possible weakness in the original acronym.
Choice describes the options and decisions available. Autonomy concerns whether the decision is genuinely self-directed rather than dominated by coercion or controlling pressure.
Are meaningful alternatives available?
Can the woman decide among them without inappropriate control or coercion?
Self-determination research supports treating autonomy as a meaningful psychological construct rather than merely another word for choice. [R72–R76]
A framework designed around women's autonomy fails if it celebrates choosing less clothing while pathologising choosing more clothing, or celebrates participation while treating refusal as a problem.
Respect is broader and less easily measured than some other C.A.R.E.S. components, but the underlying evidence is strong.
Sections 8 to 14 and 22 to 30 identified relevant behaviours: sexual objectification, harassment, unwanted photography, disregard for consent, stigma and coercive pressure can all undermine women's experience of an environment.
"Respect" therefore functions best as an umbrella for observable behavioural conditions rather than as an assumed feeling.
Environment survives the evidence review particularly strongly. Sections 4 to 7, 15 to 21 and 30 to 32 repeatedly showed that place, temperature, light, nature, work, social conditions and time can alter health-related experience.
The Matrix also demonstrates why environment must include more than physical geography.
Temperature, light, UV, air, noise, terrain, water and other material conditions.
Behaviour, evaluation, privacy, stigma and cultural expectations.
Time of day, circadian timing, season, shift timing and duration.
Rules, governance, workload, access, reporting and participation structures.
Safety also survives the evidence review, but it requires a broad definition.
Parts V and VI showed physical risks including water hazards, ultraviolet exposure, fatigue, occupational hazards and environmental conditions. Parts VII and VIII added harassment, privacy violations, coercion and perceived personal safety.
The evidence repeatedly identified accessibility, privacy, culture, evaluation and individual circumstances. The question is whether these require additional letters or can sit coherently within the five existing domains.
Transport, disability access, cost, time and facilities determine whether an option is practically available.
Rather than creating a sixth domain, these can be assessed through available choice and the environment.
Privacy concerns control over observation, information and images. These are both boundary-respect issues and potential safety issues.
Privacy should therefore remain an explicit subdomain rather than being hidden merely because it lacks its own letter.
Cultural context shapes the social meaning of clothing, body visibility, activity and participation.
Treating culture as part of the social environment prevents it from being assigned to the woman as though culture were an individual limitation.
Appearance evaluation and sexualisation are social-environment conditions that also concern how participants treat one another.
They therefore fit naturally across Respect and Environment.
One important variable cannot sensibly become another C.A.R.E.S. letter: the individual woman herself.
Age, life stage, disability, health, experience, preferences and personal circumstances can alter how all five domains operate.

C.A.R.E.S. remains an NRE-developed analytical framework. The preceding evidence supports the relevance of its component variables but does not independently validate C.A.R.E.S. as a psychometric, clinical or predictive instrument.
Section 36B will operationalise each C.A.R.E.S. domain into testable questions and measurable indicators, establish failure conditions and determine when NRE may responsibly describe an environment as women-supportive.
C.A.R.E.S. is an NRE Health Institute framework for examining whether the conditions surrounding an environment or activity support a woman's ability to participate on her own terms.
It brings together five domains repeatedly identified as relevant throughout this guide: Choice, Autonomy, Respect, Environment and Safety.
That question distinguishes C.A.R.E.S. from NRE's other frameworks.

Examines the interaction between the person, activity and environmental conditions.

The five domains represent different dimensions. A strong result in one domain should not automatically cancel a serious failure in another.
For example, an exceptionally attractive physical environment does not compensate for persistent harassment, and excellent behavioural governance does not make unsafe water conditions disappear.
Particular conditions can undermine the entire claim that an environment is women-supportive.
Participation cannot be described as autonomous when meaningful consent is absent.
An environment cannot be described as appropriately supportive where a significant foreseeable hazard remains unmanaged.
Repeated harassment or privacy violations undermine Respect and potentially Safety.
Continuing participation is not meaningfully voluntary where a participant cannot realistically withdraw.
An environment meeting C.A.R.E.S. conditions should not be described as beneficial to every woman.
The stronger and more defensible claim is that the environment has conditions designed to support women's choice, autonomy, respectful treatment, environmental suitability and safety.
The framework was developed from evidence spanning women's everyday environments, work, recreation, public space, health-supportive environments and voluntary non-sexual nudity.
Scheduling, autonomy, PPE, harassment, facilities and safety.
Accessibility, mobility, perceived safety and environmental design.
Participation options, privacy, physical conditions and social environment.
Voluntariness, body visibility, privacy, non-sexual behaviour, safety and freedom to withdraw.
Each C.A.R.E.S. domain can generate measurable questions rather than relying entirely on NRE judgement.
Future C.A.R.E.S. research could examine whether participants perceive realistic alternatives, whether practical barriers restrict those alternatives and whether participation or non-participation carries avoidable penalties.
Objective indicators may also be relevant where appropriate, including accessibility, transport, cost, opening times or availability of alternative participation arrangements.
A woman may dislike an outcome while still believing the decision was genuinely hers. Conversely, she may enjoy an activity while recognising that substantial pressure influenced her participation.
Satisfaction should therefore not be used as a substitute measure for autonomy.
Broad questions such as "Did you feel respected?" can provide useful subjective information, but C.A.R.E.S. can become more rigorous by examining specific behaviours and environmental controls.
Were boundaries and permissions understood and respected?
Were photography, recording and personal information appropriately controlled?
Were harassment, objectification or intrusive conduct reported?
Where concerns occurred, were they addressed appropriately?
Some environmental variables can be measured directly, including temperature, UV, noise, distance or accessibility.
Others require participant evidence, including whether the social environment felt evaluative, whether rules were clear or whether the organisational structure created unnecessary participation barriers.
Objective hazards and perceived safety answer different questions. Section 18 established why low recorded incident rates do not make women's perceptions irrelevant, while perceived danger does not itself quantify objective risk.
A high-quality C.A.R.E.S. environment may still contain women who decline participation.
That does not indicate framework failure. If the environment provides meaningful choice and respects the decision, non-participation can be evidence that autonomy is functioning as intended.
C.A.R.E.S. should be capable of producing different assessments for different women using the same environment.
Disability, age, life stage, cultural circumstances, transport, previous experience and personal preference can alter whether an option is accessible or acceptable.
The framework is being developed specifically from the evidence concerning women's environments and participation. Many of its underlying domains may also prove relevant to other populations.
Whether C.A.R.E.S. should later be validated or adapted for broader populations is a separate research question.
The Matrix asks how a person interacts with an environmental setting from a health and wellbeing perspective.
C.A.R.E.S. asks whether the conditions surrounding participation support a woman's agency and realistic ability to use that environment on her own terms.

The evidence accumulated through this guide supports retaining all five C.A.R.E.S. domains. Choice, Autonomy, Respect, Environment and Safety address related but distinguishable conditions affecting women's ability to use environments and participate in activities.
The framework does not establish whether participation will improve health, nor does it prescribe what women should choose.
Section 37 now moves from framework construction to application, testing C.A.R.E.S. across everyday, workplace, recreational and naturist environments.

The NRE C.A.R.E.S. Framework — Choice, Autonomy, Respect, Environment and Safety — is an NRE-developed, evidence-informed framework for analysing women-supportive environments. The cited research supports the relevance of its component domains. The integrated framework requires independent testing and validation before it can be represented as a validated assessment instrument, psychometric scale, clinical tool or predictor of health outcomes.
C.A.R.E.S. becomes useful when it moves from broad principles to specific environmental questions. The framework should be applied to a defined activity, place, time and population rather than used to label an organisation or location permanently as "safe" or "women-supportive."
The same location can perform differently depending on what a woman is trying to do there.
A park may support daytime walking while presenting different accessibility or safety conditions after dark. A workplace may be suitable for one task but poorly designed for another.
Consider a woman who wants to use a local park for regular walking. The Health & Wellbeing Matrix can assess the potential benefits and risks of the physical environment. C.A.R.E.S. asks whether she can realistically make use of that opportunity.
Are suitable routes, times and access points realistically available?
Can she choose when and how to use the park without unnecessary restrictions?
Does the social environment allow ordinary participation without persistent harassment or intrusive behaviour?
Are paths, lighting, facilities, transport connections and other relevant physical and social conditions suitable?
Are relevant hazards and personal-safety considerations identified and appropriately managed?
C.A.R.E.S. can complement occupational-health assessment without replacing it.
Occupational risk controls remain responsible for physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and psychosocial hazards. C.A.R.E.S. focuses on whether the surrounding participation conditions support women in carrying out work on appropriate terms.
Where operationally possible, are realistic options available concerning breaks, facilities, uniforms or work arrangements?
Can legitimate concerns be raised without inappropriate pressure or retaliation?
Are harassment, discrimination, privacy and personal boundaries addressed through credible workplace processes?
Do PPE, ergonomics, thermal conditions, facilities, scheduling and organisational design fit the actual workforce?
Are occupational hazards controlled through the applicable safety system?
Section 20 showed why night work is particularly suitable for a combined Matrix and C.A.R.E.S. analysis.
The Matrix can examine circadian, workload and recovery exposures. C.A.R.E.S. can examine whether organisational conditions provide realistic options and support around those exposures.
Employees cannot independently redesign every roster or operational requirement. C.A.R.E.S. should therefore not equate autonomy with unlimited employee control.
It can instead ask whether unnecessary constraints exist, whether fatigue concerns can be raised and whether realistic recovery or transport options are considered where appropriate.
A swimming facility can offer substantial physical-health opportunity while still presenting barriers concerning body image, clothing, privacy, facilities or cultural requirements.
C.A.R.E.S. can investigate whether different women have realistic ways to use the underlying health opportunity.
Are participation options compatible with different legitimate clothing or privacy preferences where feasible?
Can the woman choose the option appropriate to her without unnecessary pressure?
Are body diversity, privacy and personal boundaries respected?
Are changing facilities, accessibility, water conditions and social arrangements appropriate?
Are aquatic and facility hazards appropriately managed?
Clothing-optional environments provide a useful test because they can increase theoretical choice while potentially creating new social dynamics.
C.A.R.E.S. prevents NRE from assuming that the presence of clothing choice automatically makes the environment autonomy-supportive.
Part VIII established that voluntary non-sexual social nudity has a small but meaningful psychological evidence base, particularly around positive body image. C.A.R.E.S. does not assume those findings transfer automatically to every naturist setting.
Is participation genuinely optional, and are expectations clear before entry?
Can she cover, decline an interaction, change her mind or leave without inappropriate pressure?
Are consent, privacy, photography rules and non-sexual behavioural expectations meaningful in practice?
Are physical conditions, facilities, social behaviour and organisational arrangements appropriate?
Are physical hazards, personal safety and credible responses to misconduct addressed?
A decentralised group may have low administrative barriers while lacking formal organisational infrastructure.
C.A.R.E.S. can identify whether that flexibility is accompanied by sufficient clarity around boundaries, privacy and safety.
An organisation can use C.A.R.E.S. internally to identify weaknesses. That is useful, but self-assessment should not automatically be presented as independent verification.
The organisation evaluates its own environment using C.A.R.E.S.
Women using the environment report their own experiences across the domains.
An external evaluator applies defined C.A.R.E.S. criteria.
An organisation may believe it provides choice, respect and safety while women using the environment experience those conditions differently.
C.A.R.E.S. should therefore combine environmental information with participant evidence where feasible.
If most participants report strong conditions while a smaller group consistently reports privacy failures or harassment, an average score could conceal an important problem.
The framework can assess an existing environment, but it can also guide design before a new programme, facility or activity begins.
Section 37B will complete Part X by defining how C.A.R.E.S. findings should be reported, how serious domain failures should be handled, how the framework can be validated and what NRE may legitimately claim after applying it.
C.A.R.E.S. should become more rigorous through testing, not through increasingly confident language. Until the framework has undergone appropriate validation, its findings should describe observed or reported conditions rather than certify an environment as safe, healthy or beneficial.
C.A.R.E.S. should initially preserve Choice, Autonomy, Respect, Environment and Safety as separate findings.
This prevents strong performance in one area from concealing a serious weakness elsewhere.
What meaningful alternatives are actually available?
To what extent can decisions be made and changed voluntarily?
What evidence exists concerning consent, boundaries, privacy, dignity and response to concerns?
What physical, social, temporal and organisational conditions affect participation?
Which relevant hazards exist and how are they managed?
A numerical average could produce a reassuring result even where one domain contains a major problem.
For example, excellent facilities and multiple participation choices cannot compensate for coercion, persistent harassment or a serious unmanaged physical hazard.
Section 36 identified several conditions that can undermine a claim that an environment is women-supportive.
One severe event and many minor concerns create different patterns. C.A.R.E.S. should therefore avoid reducing all incidents to a simple count.
A woman can feel unsafe in an environment with few recorded incidents. Conversely, a person can feel safe while an objective hazard remains.
Neither source of information should automatically erase the other.
What do women using the environment report?
What environmental, organisational or incident evidence is available?
A C.A.R.E.S. result should identify what was assessed, when, for which activity and for which participant population.
Findings should not be detached from those conditions and reused as a permanent description of a location.
Staffing, management, physical infrastructure, participant behaviour, transport, lighting, policies or other environmental conditions can change over time.
Formal development should first examine whether the five domains and their proposed indicators adequately cover the construct NRE intends C.A.R.E.S. to assess.
Relevant expertise may include women's health, psychology, environmental health, occupational health, safeguarding, accessibility, research methodology and lived experience.
Before large-scale use, women from different backgrounds could be asked how they interpret proposed C.A.R.E.S. questions.
This can identify ambiguous wording, hidden assumptions and concepts that do not translate into participants' actual experience.
If C.A.R.E.S. uses structured ratings, researchers should determine whether items within domains behave consistently where consistency is theoretically expected.
Where external assessors classify environments, inter-rater reliability may also be important.
C.A.R.E.S. should demonstrate that its domains relate to established constructs in theoretically sensible ways while remaining distinct from concepts they are not intended to measure.
For example, Autonomy could be compared with established autonomy or perceived-control measures, while Respect-related indicators could be examined alongside relevant measures of harassment, privacy or interpersonal treatment.
NRE may eventually test whether C.A.R.E.S. domains predict outcomes such as willingness to participate, return intention, perceived accessibility or reported environmental trust.
Health outcomes should only be included where there is a defensible theoretical pathway and an appropriate validated outcome measure.
Choice, privacy, respect and safety can be interpreted differently across cultural settings. Section 25 established why literal translation is insufficient for international comparison.
Multilingual C.A.R.E.S. versions should therefore undergo appropriate translation, cultural adaptation and measurement-equivalence testing before country scores are compared.
A framework intended to evaluate women-supportive environments should not rely exclusively on institutional assumptions about what women need.
Women's participation in development, cognitive testing and validation can identify variables or interpretations the initial framework misses.
If testing occurs only among women already comfortable using a particular environment, barriers affecting non-users may remain invisible.
Research should therefore include current participants, potential participants and women who choose not to participate where relevant.
Until a formal assessment and validation system exists, organisations should not be encouraged to describe themselves as "C.A.R.E.S. certified," "C.A.R.E.S. approved" or equivalent.
C.A.R.E.S. fills a distinct space within NRE. The 11 Levels describe body exposure. The Matrix examines health-environment interaction. SSM investigates stigma-related attitudes. NSNMS investigates motivations and experiences. BELONG FREE provides a participation structure.
C.A.R.E.S. asks a different question: can a woman realistically participate in this environment on her own terms?
Part XI now tests the guide against a final source of oversimplification: women are not one population.
Section 38 begins with adolescents and young women, before the guide examines reproductive years, pregnancy and postpartum, menopause, ageing, disability, body diversity, socioeconomic circumstances and cultural variation.
